Sofa, settee or couch?

One particular item of furniture features heavily in Pros fic (apart from the obvious one, steady on, girls) - the large cushiony thing in the living room.
Whether it belongs in the CI5 rest room, or Bodie or Doyle's flat, it is the scene of humour, angst, drunken gropings, tender snogging, rampant sex, or just watching telly.
But what do you call it, or rather, what would they have called it? Sofa, settee or couch?
I'm still not sure what to call it myself.  Is it a class thing?  A north/south thing?

There's a little question I've wanted to ask for a while now, for fic purposes:

Is Bodie a wet shave or dry shave man?

As far as I know, Doyle always uses an electric razor, which he borrows from or shares with Bodie (The Gun, Mixed Doubles).  BUT I am sure I've seen an ep. where Bodie shaves with old-fashioned razor and soap (in the CI5 rest room?).  I like the idea that, as part of their chalk-and-cheese characters, they would differ on this, with Bodie being the traditionalist.  Is this correct, or is my imagination running away with me here?

And here's a second... and it's a seasonal one!

Around when did people in the UK stop talking about Father Christmas and start calling him Santa Claus? These days Santa Claus is standard, but back in the 60's it was *always* Father Christmas - in the UK, that is! So when did it change?

Has anyone any idea of how long a cadet trained in the Metropolitan police in the sixties, and what proportion of that time was spent out on the streets?

We thought it might be handy to have one of these - a list of frequently asked questions in Pros, or for people writing Prosfic, or... whatever really! Got a specific question you're dying to have answered? Post to [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq, hope that someone answers, and we'll link it to this Master List which is linked in turn to a new index at the top of the comm! I shall edit this little commentary bit away when everyone's got the hang of it, but for now - would anyone care to help start us off by posting (one to each post, preferably!) a question or two that they'd like answered? How do dumdums work? What do you call an ambulance driver in seventies England? Were there any gay nightclubs in Birmningham in the 1950s and what were their names? How many CI5 agents does it take to change a lightbulb? *g*

The lads live and work in London, and that's where almost all CI5 action takes place in the eps, right? So in that case, is it unrealistic to think that they might occasionally have to use the tube or bus to get back from an op?

I keep thinking of the end of Old Dog New Tricks, where Cowley apparently left the lads with no independent transport to get anywhere after the op - even if Bodie did have to take that suit back, and presumably re-claim his own clothes! - but I'm sure there are other eps where either the lads or other CI5 agents seem to be left standing somewhere in the city, when Cowley zooms off alone in the car that originally brought them all. Of course I can't quite think which eps just now... *g*

So... what do you think? Any ideas? Would it be a daft thing to put in a Prosfic, to have agents trying to figure out how they're getting home after an op because they've lost their original transport?
[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com
So [livejournal.com profile] jojosimco posted a list of her favourite tv shows of 1977, and after flicking through to see what I'd been watching too, I inevitably started to think about how useful it was to know what the lads might have found on tv when they staggered onto the couch of a night, or were stuck at home with various broken ankles, or sprained wrists, or... you know, measles or whatever. *g* And then I started wondering...

Of the shows on offer, what would they watch, and why did I think that... Would Bodie watch Warship or would he secretly love Chorlton and the Wheelies? Would they laugh and mock The Sweeney, or argue about who was who in Starsky and Hutch? Did either of them fancy Felicity Kendall? What did they think of Angela Rippon? Legs and Co? Bergerac?

So I went to see what I could find, and came up with just a few sites to spend a Friday afternoon at work on that could be used by people resarching the Pros-era for stories etc:

BBC Telly Bits - examples of a days viewing and/or listening in different months and years.

BFI's television pages - searchable by decade, and with vid clips

TV Cream - Deadly site, do not attempt to enter while at work/without several hours to spare. Takes nothing seriously. Offers to dalek-up your computer. Yes, Pros is listed *g*

ITV.com - including the "Best of the 70s"

London Weekend Television website - programmes, clips... *g*

So - Silly Friday Question the first - what shows would the lad watch, and why do you think so? And do feel free to expand into whatever realms of follow-up slash-y fantasy you might care to... *g*

Question

I don't know if this is actually allowed here or not, but I have a question. In fanon, it's mentioned that Ray doesn't like heights, and I vaguely remember that from canon (or perhaps fanon has taken over my brain). However, I can't remember what episode it's mentioned in. Does anyone know?

Thanks!
