The Reading Room reviewed
May. 6th, 2009 03:54 pmAll the parties sat down around the Reading Room round table over the weekend, we got in the beer and sandwiches, and the result was a raft of very helpful proposals, comments and feedback. The interest and solidarity shown is very much appreciated.
There seemed to be strong support for continuing with a weekly fic, a ratio of 2:1 on a very unscientific poll. This is with the proviso that fics are scheduled in advance, so readers who can’t join in every week can choose when they will participate, and there is more time to read longer fics.
There was also support for inviting authors to discuss their own writing. The practicalities have yet to work themselves out, but initially a reader would need to approach an author to agree to participate. It makes sense that at the same time they would also agree how they would like to present the discussion. For instance, the reader might helpfully nominate a particular story by the author. There is also the question of whether the author would annotate the story and/or write about it and/or answer readers’ questions. Alternatively, the reader might rec it, and the author answer readers’ questions.
As before, I am looking for the first post to begin the weekend’s discussion on or around a Thursday evening. That post can be as short or as long as the reccer chooses, and the reccer should not feel obliged to ‘host’ the ensuing discussion or respond to every comment. New readers are welcome, as well as those who have recced already.
Beginning as we mean to go on, below are slots for the four weeks starting next Thursday, 14 May. Before the end of the four weeks, I will ask for another four weeks in advance and so on.
Please let me know of a fic (as before) or a guest author you wish to nominate for one of the following dates (or a later date even):
14 May
21 May
28 May "Neon Nights" by Elessar
4 June "The Cook and the Warehouseman" by Helen Raven http://www.kelper.co.uk/cook/index.html

Date: 2009-05-06 04:59 pm (UTC)Oh good! I never saw or took part in any discussion of it, so I'm really looking forward to hearing what people have to say.
Maybe I should have posted the link?
