The Reading Room
Mar. 17th, 2009 02:42 pmThat was a fascinating discussion over last weekend, ranging from the social hierarchy of Victorian England to the very Pros-y topic of how far the lads can be out of character in an AU, and it still be Pros fic.
I know everyone here will join me in thanking
for volunteering Lizzie's 'The Victorian Kitchen Gardener'. To finish work on Thursday night, injure your leg, spend hours in A&E and still post for The Reading Room is dedication indeed. Let your reward be knowing how much pleasure everyone seems to have had reading and talking about the fic. Thank you very much for posting your rec and hosting the discussion. And thanks to everybody who joined in, or even just read the fic and looked in to see what other people were saying about it.
Now, would anyone like offer a rec for this week?
The only condition is that the fic should be online, so everyone can get access to it. Slash (or gen) goes without saying, I hope, in this company.
To suggest a rec for next Thursday, please comment to this post. The first rec received will be it.

Date: 2009-03-17 03:16 pm (UTC)Looking forward to the next selection.
Also...since I'm generally here on a Tuesday morning...if anyone would like me to volunteer their selection due to time differences, I'll be happy to try.

Date: 2009-03-17 03:32 pm (UTC)Maybe you missed last time's conversation about folks feeling they might not be able to get their story selections in on time due to the time difference?
Anyway, if anyone should feel disadvantaged in that way, I'm happy to put their selection in the ring -- they'd obviously have to conduct the discussion and all that. But that didn't seem to be the problem.

Date: 2009-03-17 04:03 pm (UTC)I don't think there's any time limit to suggesting a story though is there - just when anyone who thinks of one does... It's not to be posted until Thursday anyway, so... yeah, hopefully no one's feeling left out! (I remember being so behind in Alaska... *g*)

Date: 2009-03-17 04:22 pm (UTC)But any other week, as we discussed last week, one solution is to use a proxy, as jgraeme has kindly volunteered.
And there is no latest deadline. If people on this side of the water are tardy, there's still time for other timezones.

Date: 2009-03-17 10:42 pm (UTC)Oh, bless you, you don't have to do that! I have to admit you were right when you said it would slow down - I could have posted this week, 'cos no-one's taken up the challenge yet, except that I *might* be going away for the weekend (tbc by the OH) which would make it a bad idea to get involved in discussiony stuff.

Date: 2009-03-17 09:13 pm (UTC)I wouldn't want to book up the Reading Room solid for weeks in advance, but I don't see a problem with just the one, since you've been good enough to volunteer.
Now we just need one for this week...

Date: 2009-03-18 07:01 am (UTC)But somehow you, Jgraeme and me seem to have frighten people to hell so that nobody dares to rec this week... ;-)
I'm really sad about that!

Date: 2009-03-18 08:17 am (UTC)*g* Acually I'm totally prepared to rec, it's just that I'll be away this weekend (Fri night to Sunday morning Lad's time) so I thought I'd wait for another time. But since no-one else has replied, I'll do it:
"Never Let Me Down" by Shoshanna. It's a long one, but not as long as 'Labyrinth'.

Date: 2009-03-18 11:20 am (UTC)And don't feel obliged to do too much yourself beyond posting about the fic on Thursday, I'm sure animated discussion will ensue without too much prompting.

Date: 2009-03-18 11:44 am (UTC)One of my all-time favourite films and largely responsible for my PhD, which was about Henry II's son Geoffrey, even though he wasn't the one who seduced young King Philip in the film. Can't wait to read more...
Will get in the TimTams in your honour.
RE your post, timing of, I've given you a vague 'later this week', and with you going away on Friday, no doubt you'll want to do it Thursday your time (otherwise I'd suggest Friday your time, since you're so far ahead).
I always try to look in on the Reading Room discussions, so I will make more of an effort to while you're away. As I said earlier, not that the participants need any encouragement...
Have a good weekend away.
