Of Challenges and Comms and Gangplanks...
Aug. 13th, 2006 01:51 pmSo... where to start...
empty_mirrors and I got to thinking about doing some more Pros challenges, and about whether to keep them in our own livejournals or wot and we kind of made an lj Pros comm... I know, I know, there are lots about already which is brilliant, but this one is specifically for posting challenges and responses to challenges, and we're gonna start out with International Talk Like A Pirate Day. Which didn't really seem to fit in at any of the existing comms, hence the making one up specially...
And it's called Discovered in A Livejournal when it's not called something else, and it's here:
discoveredinalj if you'd like to take a look...
Basically, we're going to put up Pros slash/gen-friendly challenges every now and then, and anyone who would like to play is more than welcome. Contributions can be fic, long or short or drabble, artwork of any kind, vids, etc etc - anything really, as long as it's Pros and slash/gen and vaguely related to the challenge of the moment!
The first challenge is up, if you'd like to play please comment on the post. Submissions are due to the comm on September 19th. No one's committed to anything, and unless you'd rather we posted it for you (or can't join the comm because you don't have an lj), then you're free to post your creation yourself on the appropriate day - the idea is that people will receive a bunch of Pros-ness in their flists on a specific day, to peruse at their leisure...
And finally - please do tell anyone else you think might be interested! We're pimping this to our ljs, and to CI5hq via which it will make its way to ProsLit, but I'm sure that won't reach all Pros-y people who might like to join in, so...
And ideas/thoughts/comments welcome too... *g*

I have one. Why have everything posted on one day? Why not just go for a 'deadline is xxx'.
I've seen gift fic exchanges and this kind of challenge, and having everything on one day is overwhelming, and people actually read less because everything is there at once, than they would if it's spread out during the two weeks/month/whatever.
Just my twopenn'rth. I hope you don't mind the comment/thought/idea :-)

Date: 2006-08-13 01:36 pm (UTC)No, love the comment/thought/ideas! Please feel free! And please do think about signing up for one of the challenges... *g* That's a totally valid point about the timing of challenges too.
We did think about the when-to-post thing, and as we're thinking right now it will be different for different challenges. The Talk Like A Pirate Day and Halloween, for example, are both very specific day-related celebrations, and so we thought the posts would be most effectively done on the day itself. But then Christmas will be different, and if there are non-day/celebration challenges then they'll be flexible.
The other thing is that a single day actually stretches over two days really, when you take into account the difference of 18 hours between Australia and Alaska for instance (I happen to know that one!)
And finally, we're not assuming that we'll get dozens of responses to any of the challenges I guess, although it would be lovely if we did! If there was a response like that then I think you're right, we'd have to re-think the timing of posts... And we're all about the flexible, so if other people want to throw in a tupporth or two then we're listening... *g*
