A nice long story to settle in with on a lazy Sunday.
It starts with lads on surveillance and arguing about Bodie not being a fan of Christmas:
“A lot of fuss and tears over a bit of tinsel and overpriced rubbish from people you’d rather spit at the rest of the year--and if you’re opening your mouth to give me one more ‘bah humbug’ remark, I shall come over there and sit on you.”
But there is a bit of tension between the lads that seems not to be related to the holiday.
The operation goes tits up and Doyle is injured. Cowley sends Bodie out of town with Anson and McCabe and Doyle is left on his own at home to recover. Expecting his brother-in-law to pick him up for a ride to Derby, Doyle is surprised to find a package-laden Bodie at the door.
It couldn’t be happening and any minute he was going to fall off the settee and wake up again, but somehow Bodie was in his kitchen on Christmas Eve, pulling mince pies and bisto out of a carrier bag. And looking almost festive in a burnt-red shirt and black cords. He let the vision sink in a moment longer, then felt the need for explanations when none were forthcoming.
Being Doyle, he pushes for that explanation and Bodie finally gives in:
“What these pearls from my past are supposed to tell you, Doyle, is that I don’t give a toss about Christmas. Never have, never will. But you, dozy sentimental sod that you are, you go loopy for it given half the chance. And you were getting all worked up about it and sounding like someone had nicked your puppy on the phone-”
And this is followed by one of the best written Bodie lines ever – you’ll have to read the story to find out what he said!
A good episode-worthy plot, but the best part of the story is the relationship and banter between the lads. It’s all here-the unvoiced feelings, the caring, the teasing, spot on dialogue and perfect characterization. Callisto knows the lads inside and out and they are written perfectly in her stories.
Oh, I forgot to mention – McCabe’s feet...
Enjoy!
