A few days back, I was looking for a zine. It’d been emailed to me some time back; but, several laptops on, I no longer have the document on my local drive. The premise, the plot, and even the name of the company Doyle worked for: I remember all that (surprisingly enough). I just don't remember the name of the fic itself. So off it was to the interwebs to check zine listing sites for a hint.
Still haven’t found it, but I found another really intriguing fic: A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words.
How to describe this story without spoiling it? Well, it’s told in retrospect by a young woman. Moving into a new house, and cleaning out a desk left by the prior owner, she finds a picture of a striking green-eyed man. Later that night, during a terrible storm, someone comes knocking at her door: it’s the green-eyed man from the picture, even more striking than the image. His car has broken down, he has to be somewhere quickly, and he had once lived on the premises. Could he use the phone?
And that’s when we go down the rabbit hole.
On the surface, it’s not a happy story – there’s death, and a missed chance, and a twist of the bizarre. But all is made right by the end; it’s merely a slow unravel to figure out just what’s happening.
So, you’re (somewhat) forewarned – but read it. It’s worth it.
And no, still haven't found the zine I was looking for. :-(

Date: 2021-01-19 02:04 pm (UTC)Basically, Doyle's a street-wise high-class prostitute, working for a call service named Housecalls (which also did legit work as a cover). He has a wealthy client who begs off, and Bodie (as a pseudo-merc employed by the client) comes in the client's place. They have a wonderful night, and Bodie promises to get in touch when he has a more settled address (oh, and Doyle is temporarily blinded because original client, so he can't actually see Bodie), but he loses the contact info (and I think the client ends up assassinated in the next few days, so Bodie lays low anyway).
Years pass - and they meet up again (during a case). Doyle is still at Housecalls, and Bodie has moved on to CI5. Only Doyle doesn't know Bodie is the guy who "died" with the client's assassination.
And that's just the beginning!
...If it'd been called "Housecalls," I'd be in perfect shape to find it.
That's fairly specific. Do you know which one I'm talking about? :D
