Fic Report: Fanfic Old and New
Oct. 20th, 2020 03:29 amHello. It's fic report time again. I have less to report this week, partly because I'm not including any of the Big Bang entries I've read. Here are six items I found notable, though:
The Siren Series by Sebastian (36632 total words, slash)
I reread this series this week in search of the "worst line written by any slash writer ever, in the history of fandom," which Sebastian declares is in there somewhere. I didn't find it, but the reading was worthwhile nevertheless. I liked this series when I first read it, way back near the beginning of my interest in Pros, and I still like it. Doyle's character interpretation is extreme, with uncertain canon support, but I find the unusual B/D relationship that results intriguing enough to roll with it. The action writing in part three is excellent, also.
A Future to This Life by Verlaine (46508 words, slash)
Warning: This story includes rape.
This one is from the list of desert island fics chosen at Bistocon. It is an excellent sci-fi AU with an absorbing plot and a vivid setting. I enjoyed and admired it. I did think, though, that it missed an important opportunity to develop one of its major themeswhen it did not ask whether the ANN (ship's computer) should be treated as a sentient being after she appeared to develop human emotions. I found the omission jarring .
There You Are by
jat_sapphire (4567 words, slash)
Here something else I reread this week. This story kept haunting me, returning to my mind over and over after my initial reading some months ago. So I finally read it again. It is beautiful. That's all I really want to say about it: beautiful in both content and execution.*
Not Even Good-bye by Rob (5792 words, slash)
This is an enjoyable fic with a lot of emotion. I read it after
cim3745 shared some lines from it in the Best Lines thread. Apparently it was written in November 1983, which is cool, since that's a year, if not a month, during which Pros was actually on the air.
Bodie Goes to Market by LilyK /
sc_fossil (330 words, slash)
This fic is sweet, but with a teasing edge that suits the characters. There is something about it that I find very charming.
The Least Favourite Themes Drabble by The Hag /
hagsrus (100 words, slash)
This fic is really funny, but be warned...just kind of generally warned.
_____
*Though, as ever, YMMV. There are personal reasons that I find this story so moving. It's hard to know what others' experiences might be.

Date: 2020-10-20 11:42 am (UTC)It seems as if you're having as much fun trawling the archives as I did when I first ran across Pros fanfic 😊
Long may it continue!
