I've been at the fanfic again. It's that kind of week.
I read two fics by The Hag (
hagsrus), The Gift of the Moggy and Discovered in a Furball. I liked The Gift of the Moggy very much. It is lighthearted and silly, but also has a lot of heart, as well as some serious moments that add depth. Discovered in a Furball was less memorable, but also enjoyable.
As a result of a comment by
byslantedlight on my last post, I have been trying to remember which Pros fic was the first one I ever read. A check of my browser history suggested that it might have been Phoenix Rising by PR Zed, but when I examined that fic, it became clear that I had not finished it on my first reading. That was probably due to the intense depiction of grief in the first part of the fic. It is beautifully done, but I found it hard to take on this second reading just as I think I must have on my first. I persevered this time, though, and enjoyed the story quite a bit overall.
Another fic I revisited was Quinquireme of Nineveh by
fiorenza_a. It, too, is difficult to take emotionally--so sad!--but worth it for both its lovely language and its interpretations of the characters. I have added it to my archive of favorite stories.
I also read a number of fics by jj_minerva, who wrote the Pros/MFU crossover I mentioned in my last post. My feelings about them varied. The Greatest Song series was well written and affecting (though I thought the first installment was much stronger than the second). Blinded was well executed and reasonably cute. Sunday's Child had some good moments before ending a bit off key. The Male Factor seemed disorganized and didn't really hang together for me, though it did have amusing elements. My least favorite was the longish A Taste for It. Much of its dialogue did not strike me as lifelike, and the plot felt improbable; it would have been sensible for me not to finish that one, but I did anyway. (Warning for Americanisms in jj_minerva's stories.)
