I wasn't sure if we were still doing fic reports, but apparently we are. I have read two long Pros fics and a few short ones over the past week or so.

The first long fic was Forget That I Remember, Dream That I Forget by Pamela Rose, which I read after [livejournal.com profile] cim3745 recommended it. This fic took a while to win me over, but I enjoyed it a lot in the end. Some of the behavior of the mercenaries seemed implausible and not really necessary to the narrative. Most of that was confined to the first half of the story, though. The second half of the story boasts some great scenes, and the ending is excellent; by the time I finished the fic, I felt quite enthusiastic about it.

The second long fic was Of Tethered Goats and Tigers by Tarot / Chris_Quinton. This one had a lot of casefic elements, and I thought those worked very well. The romantic part of the story didn't work as well for me, because I had trouble understanding why the characters were doing what they were doing. The lack of clarity may have been deliberate--a way to communicate the characters' confusion to the reader--but I found it frustrating. (It may also be that I'm more subject to this kind of lack of understanding than most people, so others shouldn't necessarily let that criticism put them off.)

Among the short fics I read was Monopoly by Kitty Fisher, which is BDSM PWP (*blush*). Don't worry, I'm not going to complain that it had too much sex. I thought it was fantastic.

I also read Hot Chocolate Bodie (which is BDSM PWP, too, of a sort) and the other fics by the Hag that [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight linked. Those were all amusing, in varying degrees, with different measures of the bizarre.

I'm rubbish with story titles, so I forget which story is about what. I'm sure I've read both long fic, but I can't remember what I thougt of them because I've forgotten which stories belong to which title. I notice some of the older stuff is going up on AO3 now, perfect excuse to get (re)reading, especially as the Newsletter is now listing them 😊

I'd love to reciprocate with some fic recs of my own, but I haven't read anything much lately - and without the files on my old computer, I can't remember the titles of what I have read. One of the titles I can remember (probably because it is what it says on the tin) is 'A Mercenary's Tale (https://archiveofourown.org/works/541908?view_adult=true)' by Fictionwriter (https://archiveofourown.org/users/Fictionwriter/pseuds/Fictionwriter), it came to mind because of what you said about the behavior of the mercenaries seem[ing] implausible, if you've not read it already, you might like to check it out. I think the depiction of Bodie's time in Africa is one of the best I've come across.

If you haven't already found the Reading Room in [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq, there's a good amount of stories and review debate there, I would certainly recommend checking out the [livejournal.com profile] ci5hq archive for it. (Ditto the [livejournal.com profile] discoveredinalj archive, which I'm sure you've already found, for content not archived elsewhere.)

A while back I started a thing in my own journal (which I fully intend to pick up again) re-reading my AO3 history (https://fiorenza-a.livejournal.com/tag/re-reading%20my%20history) and doing little reviews of what I'd read, you're more than welcome to check that out too (it includes some Man from Uncle stuff). Feel free to add a comment if that works for you. Also, please feel free to critique anything of mine you read anywhere you find it - I don't take well to being told what I can write, I don't think any fic writer should be told that, but having written it, I'm always happy to get concrit. I'd love to be a better writer - and that's the only way to get there!

No worries, they may or may not be of some help.

Fic reports are what this comm was made to do, so there's never any need to stop doing them! *g* It's good to see people reading Pros and posting here, no matter when - that's just what the "challenge" was hopefully to help with. *g*

Kitty Fisher's Feasting with Panthers was the first Pros fic I ever read - wow! There was an introduction! *g* Glad you liked Monopoly too - it's probably one of my favourites!

Good grief, there's a start! Didn't whatever was next pale in comparison?

(It makes me feel better when other people post these, so thanks.) "Tethered Goats" is one of those that I never connect the title to the story, so when I reread it, I'm a bit in when I say to myself, "Oh THAT one!" But to better effect than some. I thought I would not like it, given the undercover setup, and more than once I've gone back to the description to check the pairing. But I kind of like a story when B and D get together because one of them is just too jealous to keep quiet. I found the title of "Monopoly" unusually distracting, wondering wherher it was metaphorical (yup) before I realised it also was not. Not a favorite subgenre of mine. SH tends to have BDSM of such a mild kind that I couldn't even figure it out, until I read a trilogy of non-fanfic that finally conveyed to me what this stuff is all about, after which I was even less satisfied by the laying-satin-ribbon-across-his-wrists type. (Sorry about that BSG fic of mine.) (No ribbons.) I've read the hot-chocolate story before, but it just slips out of my brain every time! Thanks for the recs and links!

Monopoly is by far the hottest, best bdsm fic in any fandom I've read. I've recced it so many times and people not even in Pros seem to enjoy it. It is exactly what I want in a bdsm story, considering alley sex isn't even my kink. :)
