Why Stop? Random Circuit Archive Part 4
Jun. 5th, 2019 04:08 pm36 more mini reviews, hopefully not of too many Christmas ones.
"Personal Delivery" by Deb
Bodie really likes those anonymous Valentine cards he's been getting. Then he finds out who was sending them.
Cute. And not Christmas.
"Arabian Nights" by Suzan Lovett
I don't like the story, but damn! The art!
"Trifles and Confirmations" by Sally Fell
The title comes from Othello, so it's no surprise that the subject is jealousy. I loved the sweet little gesture right at the end.
"Black Bodie's Bargain" by N. N. West
This is my favourite of the pair of gay-pirate stories, the one from Bodie's point of view.
"M'Aidez!" by Asymphototropic
Established relationship, cold wet obbo, discussion of word origins, Cowley joke. I mean, if you don't mind no plot and no sex, it's kinda cute.
"Love in a Faithless Country" by Alexandra
Doyle's in love, and wants love from Bodie, but Bodie doesn't believe in love. There's also an assassin. I think this might be my favorite new (to me) story so far.
"Shades of Red" by Zoe
Drabble with red rage, red blood ... and one other red. It's OK.
Revelations series by Vesta: "Revelations," "Morning," and "Bodie's Morning."
I actually got the third story randomly, but backed up and read them in order. Williams wants Bodie, which makes Doyle so jealous that he realizes that he also wants Bodie. They have a sweet if strenuous night, and in the morning by the time Cowley calls them in, each thinks that there may be other women but never another man.
I have ranted at length in the past about the "We're Not Gay, We Just Love Each Other" trope (I mean, the LJ post even made Fanlore though that might be for the weird argument in comments) (and, OK, it's called "My Name Is Ranty McRantypants"), but actually in this series I was more irritated by the way "Bodie's Morning" is different from "Morning" ONLY in point of view. I can't help but wonder what the reason for doing that is.
"Burning Bridges" by PFL
I've read this before, several times, but just go read it if you haven't. My favorite line: "No one's letting you near an R/T ever again."
"A Statement of Affairs" by Gloria Lancaster
Doyle's point of view as he tells Bodie (maybe only in his head) how they became partners and sex partners ... but not lovers. Maybe some day.
"Pancake Tuesday" by The Hag
They live together. Doyle makes lots of pancakes and Bodie eats most of them.
Cute and loving.
"Evidence" by FJ Bryan
On New Year's Day, Doyle wakes up in Bodie's bed. I love this story.
"Rough Patch" by Alexandra
To avoid being fired, Bodie and Doyle agree that they should still go out with women to conceal their own sexual relationship. It's hard for Bodie to watch Ray dance, though. I mean, it's vivid and they love each other.
"Pub Crawling" by Rebelcat
Cute case plot and a great last line. I like Bodie indignant about how tough his mother is. Someday I must write Battling Bodie Mother.
"A Residence Afresh" by Barbara Thomas
A first-person death story. That's already spoilery enough, sorry.
"Saying Things" by Callisto
Sometimes you've got to put something into words. This is adorable.
"Owner's Manual" by DVS
I've read this before, but it's still charming. The partners read aloud from one of those books for boys and try some new things.
"Tear" by Livia Collins
Bodie thinks he has to quit CI5 because it's getting so difficult not to pounce on Ray. I thought the ending could be stronger.
"Stupid Bastard" by Heliophile
3 drabbles. When Bodie takes a crease to keep Doyle safe, the feelings boil up. I liked this.
"Flirting Dragon King and Ring of Fire" by Slantedlight
2 drabbles named after fireworks, because sometimes you light the blue flash paper and you don't step away.
"Gay Sir Galahad" by O Yardley
Post "Cry Wolf." Bodie put Susan Grant's brother (if she had one) to shame.
"Like a Thunderstorm" by Callisto
Bodie doesn't do Christmas, or Doyle ... until ...
Oh, well, archive, if you must pull up one of my favorite Christmas fics...
"Object of Desire" by Courtney Grey
One of those titles I think at first won't connect to the story much, and then it really does. They find something in a basement that makes Doyle consider their relationship differently. I recommend it.
"Cold Spell" by PR Zed
They're on a training exercise and zip their sleeping bags together, and this is not one of those body-warmth-melts-UST tropes, thank goodness. Yes, I recommend it.
"Bodie for Christmas" by Meridian
Bodie plans a Christmas surprise with a reheatable meal, silk sheets and ribbon for a cock ring. An Anne Higgins kind of story.
"Leftovers" by HG
Lads thinking of retirement, planning new jobs and sex. Oh, and December 27th. Technically not Christmas. Of course I recommend it!
"The Power of Love" by Anna Parrish
Fantasy AU. Bodie rubs away from his abusive father and apprentices to an evil warlock. But Doyle comes back from school and everything changes. Doyle is younger than Bodie. But not an elf, so that's something.
"Winning the Pools" by Dee
Is happiness in marriage (or the non-legal equivalent) as rare as winning the pools? Bodie thinks it is. Doyle doesn't.
"Glenmorangie" by the Hag
I've read this before, but it's as cute as ever. They wake up in bed together, naked and hungover, and Murphy slept on the couch and can tell them the tale.
"No Gentleness" by O Yardley, party Spirits #17
Post "Bloodsports," in which Bodie can't wait and afterwards is weighed down by guilt. It's fine. I ahould re-read it after watching "Bloodsports" again. All I remember is a little about Anita.
"Old Fears and Temptations" by PFL
At a Security conference in New York, Bodie and Doyle run into Ann (Holly) Johnson. Bodie leaves them to reminisce, but Doyle comes back to the hotel room after him.
I like an Ann Holly story that doesn't make her a monster.
"Roommates" by Elessar
Bodie (neatnik) and Doyle (not) are forced to share a one-bedroom flat for about 6 months. Cowley figures they'll either kill each other or fall in love.
Not a death story.
"Partridge in a Pear Tree" by Lily
(Twelve Days of Christmas #1) and "Seven Swans a Swimming" (#7)
Bodie and Doyle are minding the country house estate of an old mate of Bodie's. Bodie has arranged the gifts of the song to let Doyle know that Bodie loves him. I can't say more about the plot since the archive seems only to have #1 and #7. They've made me want to read the others if I can find them someday.

I wonder if the last two were ever written? I couldn't see a list on Hatstand, and I don't have one on Palelyloitering either - and the stories don't come up in the zines I have listed either.
Anyway - perhaps we can get together and get them all up on ProsLib (since you've presumably got permission for Lily's stories to be up there) for this Christmas?
