Prosfic Rec Advent Calender - Day 20

ci5hqThis is my day of posting recs and I am intending to use this privilege fully by proposing, not one but two fics, one humorous and the other thoughtful, so there would be something for everyone's taste. Actually they couldn't be more opposite.
The first one is "Festival of Lights" by Dorinda. Sure, it's not about Xmas, Yule or the Winter Solstice (at least not explicitely though it's very likely all that season's celebrations had had historically the same source: the need to remember the Light when it is at its lowest down). Moreover the connection with the theme is not the time of the year but the symbol : the victory of Life over Death. The writer herself wrote in her introduction she wrote it "for a holiday celebration on the CI5 (Professionals slash) mailing list, 1996. There were a lot of Christmas stories; I wanted to try a different take, inspired by a different holiday". Which was also my wish. I should have thought of making the dates coincide, of course, but the right days were already taken.
The story is well known and must have been recced many times but still always worth reading again.
