So, here we are with the todays Guess the Story. I have three clues which I will post all over the day. And at the evening we take a look at the comments and you can see, which story it was. I'll screen the comments, so nobody will know before the evening if someone knew it.

Clue one

Deeper down in the little cache he found what he was looking for.

Clue two

He had bought a live Christmas tree in a pot, only twelve inches high. He'd set it on the windowsill among his forced bulbs and draped a string of tiny lights around it. He cut out the figure of Cowley from one of the photographes he and Bodie collected for various bits of foolery and fastened it to the tip of the tree, remembering the Christmas trees of childhood and the noisy squabbling excitement of siblings and cousins as they speculated about the presents stacked under and around.

He set down his cup and went into the living room, drawing back the curtains to let in the grey morning. On the windowsill the little tree stood forlornly, and he thought about relieving it of its undignified burden of decoration. He'd have to sort out a place it could get enough light, or find it a proper home in the earth, somewhere he could keep an eye on it while it got its roots dug in. He and Bodie could sneak it into a corner of the park - -

"What are
you staring at, you malevoelnt old sod?" he demanded of Cowley's picture. "Working on the next helping of chaos?"

Oh, and have the third clue as well. It is only a picture this time *g*

Clue three

He picked up the little box, unfolded the card and read *Merry Christmas, Will, with much love from Mum.*

That are all clues you'll get from me. :-)

Having only one line to go by is very tough(!) but intriguing.... sounds like something from a ci5mates story: A Trophy Highly Prized or a Prize Highly Valued? Great photo, too.

In my excitement at seeing a new post on my flist I didn't read everything properly and thought one line was the only clue we were going to get! A good challenge, though. Thanks a lot.

I don't remember the name - but is it the one where B & D are hunted by the rich people for sport?

That sounds like the two recent ci5mates stories that I mentioned earlier up at The Archive of our own. Great, great stories, I loved them.

Oh, you're harsh - just one line to go from!

It does ring a bell though - I'm thinking that Bodie's gone to his cached car, and he's found what he needs to... to what?! That's as far as I can go with that at the moment, but I shall look forward to the next clue!

I have to admit that it was your lovely picture, with added gift-wrapped box, that helped jog my memory.

Thanks for posting this game.

Oh, it's Boxing Day by The Hag - excellent choice! *vbg* And now the "cache" is even more familiar - I was thinking at first of his weapons there, of course, but... of course!

Excellent Sunday rec post - thank you! *vbg* I'm really looking forward to your next Guess-the-fic post already!

I'm guessing now it's not one of ci5mates' stories....

It was the word 'cache' which threw me, I wasn't even thinking of a Christmas story which was stupid of me!

I'm terrible at this sort of things, so, true to form, I have no idea what story this is, though it does sound familiar. Looking forward to learning the title so that I can read it! *g*

Boxing Day, by The Hag. One of my all-time favorites! (And I got it after the first clue, but due to time zones, only saw the post after all three clues had been given, of course. *g*)

Don't recognize the story at all but loved the clues and would like to read the story! Particularly liked him cutting out Cowley's picture to put on the tree.
