I have no money and no blu ray player - so looking forward to posts too!

I will keep my fingers crossed for a swift arrival in your local stores/internet purchasing emporium :0)

Cool--and I discovered there are pros eps on YT so I watched Foxhole, since I had the pretty glimpse. It was not such fine quality and honestly, I don't particularly like that episode, but hey, it was Bodie, Doyle and Cowley! I only own season one and two.

Excellent news, thank you! I'll still be waiting for the dvds, but at least they must be getting closer too!

Foxhole isn't one of my go-to eps, but actually even this scene was pretty touch-y - I've never noticed that before! Cowley comes running in and sweeps his hand across Bodie, then he lays his other hand on Doyle, and pretty much leaves it there the whole time he's crouched down! Then when the lads run out to help the injured man, Bodie comes up behind Doyle, and he's got his hands all over him as he sort of works out his way to the other side of the man. *g*

Maybe I'll watch a Pros ep today... *g*

Funny how it goes - Foxhole is one of my favourite eps :0)

Life would be no fun if we all chose the same favourites.

So what is it you like about Foxhole, then?

I know DIAG might be considered the fan fav in some quarters - and I do like it thematically - but all Doyle's psychedelic, fisheye introspection leaves me cold. Lots of Bodie running though - love Bodie in motion. And Doyle's chatup - love Doyle's attempts at flirtation. Bodie does most of his flirting with his eyes, Doyle's definitely a word man.

And it does make good fic fodder - I've used it myself before - sort of pre-echo it in Bodie 'Flu, and the thing I'm writing now is a spin off. So I see why it's a fav, if not the fav, but...

...Foxhole - early outing for Karl Howman - in drag! Proper (and, to an extent, sympathetic) villain backstory - ensemble casting - Bodie not paired with Doyle. Murphy! Wounded! Dangling!

I love all the chimney stack stuff - it's Bodie at some of his worst and best. I've read criticisms of the end, but I back Bodie. Equality is exactly that. The small print doesn't come in pink and blue. In fact, for my money, it probably vies with Fall Girl for good Bodie endings.

Honourable nurses given a bit of respect as professionals rather than as carry-on totty. A genuine standoff situation. Russians, and nuclear bombs, and rogue Chief Constables, make good CI5 fodder. But the Foxhole standoff is a believable real-life scenario. It could have genuinely happened. There were more guns around in the seventies/early eighties and far less security consciousness. The mainland was wary of bombs, not lone-wolf snipers. People were suspicious of packages, looking under their cars - not at the roof tops.

It's TV of its era - so it has all the lovely faults we've learned to love with CI5 (and Blake's 7 etc.) - but it's a fav with me.

I've never had the impression that Discovered in a Graveyard is a fandom favourite (though it's one of my favourites) - I'm curious about what made you think it might be? As far as I know, general favourites tend to be Purging, Mixed Doubles, Hunter/Hunted - and various others, more or less, of course.

You've picked a reason for your liking it, but that means I don't particularly warm to Foxhole of course - Bodie and Doyle not working together. Murphy's okay, but I've never particularly "got" him as a character, he didn't really have time to become any kind of individual, to me (though I find Benny and Jax and Stuart all very much individual characters, and Murphy was in far more episodes).

What are the criticisms of the ending? I don't remember reading anything like that, but it sounds interesting.

The 'woman' (Karl Howman) is shot, without hesitation - by Bodie. The 'by Bodie' bit seems to generate the heat. Completely unreasonably, in my view. He shot a fleeing crim, in a skirt. I'm happy to debate whether he had grounds to shoot 'her', but not his right to shoot a woman. To be fair, this appears to be one of the 'old' controversies - I've not seen anything modern on it. But I do like trawling through the dustbin of fandom history. Apparently the novelisation justifies it by stating that Bodie could see 'her' hairy arms - I have no idea if that's true. But it would be interesting if it is, it wouldn't be an issue today.

I don't have any of the novels, I'm not generally a fan of novelisations - but as I haven't read any Pros ones - I can't judge specifically. I usually try and read the book if the thing has original source material - and obviously Sherlock, Dickens etc., I've often read before I see the adaptation. Bizarrely, I've sometimes read the play before I've seen it performed. And I've read both 'Taste of Honey' and 'Tis Pity She's a Whore' and never seen them performed.

I only have the impression DIAG is a fav because a) it's endlessly referenced - it should have its own tag! and b) folk keep telling me it's one of theirs. Unscientific straw poll - admittedly.

'Course referencing any story, doesn't make it a 'like' fav, more a 'pinned' fav - since a lot of fic is 'fix-it fic' and folk don't write ep based fix-it fics for fics they necessarily like..

It's interesting looking through the various discussion archives, isn't it! I've not come across the ones you're referencing though - any idea where they were? I've not seen any controversy about Bodie shooting a woman in Foxhole (or Doyle shooting at one in Fugitive - and relatively little controversy about Bodie slapping a woman in Close Quarters. Interestingly, whether it's okay to shoot a woman or not is explored in Clemen's Pros story, Operation Impossible!

I've just re-checked the ep and checked the novelisation too. I can see people being upset by the ep actually - not specifically that Bodie shot a woman, but that Bodie shot an innocent hostage! He doesn't know, in the ep, that the hostage is a fake, and no one else does either, so it does look like he shot an innocent person - but then didn't fire at the actual "kidnapper"!

In the novelisation we're given a reason for him firing - it does indeed say he caught a glimpse of hairy arms. So presumably he realised it wasn't a hostage at all, it was someone disguised as a hostage, but there's no sense of that left in the episode itself. So I wonder if the controversy was more that he shot an innocent bystander rather than that he shot a woman.

I think we're using "favourite" in different ways, re: DiaG. I mean eps that people have actually said they like the best. I agree that DiaG is probably one of the most references, fic-wise - but to me that doesn't translate to mean it's a "favourite", as you say.

Sorry about that, got a bit side tracked and then fell asleep, then thought I'd write some Pros for Bingo - and then fell asleep again (bit of a busy week in work - tired). So missed Mickey Hamilton. Sorry again!

Anyhoo - couldn't find the original references, I lost a lot of links rolling back and forth between Windows 10 & 8, but I did find the novelisation reference at Dave Matthew's authorised site (http://www.mark-1.co.uk/Professionals/e01.htm). As I said, I'm quite happy to discuss whether Bodie had the right to shoot (and yes, you're right - that did raise eyebrows - myself I think Bodie errs on justified in the circumstances - but there's a definite debate there), but not that he can't shoot a woman. From memory, the arguments were pretty much the same you get around Bodie slapping Julia in Close Quarters (and I've seen quite a bit on that - but again couldn't find my links - arrggg!).

And again I'm happy to discuss whether you should slap anyone with hysterics, but not that Bodie can't slap a woman with hysterics. My take, you shouldn't slap anyone with what you perceive to be hysteria - but that includes men. So Bodie shouldn't be slapping anyone. Again it's not a pink or blue argument.

I think a lot of it came from the Bodie-as-thug school. For some reason there were either a lot of people with that view, or a small number of influential people with that view - hard to tell - I'm not sure of the attribution sources. But it seems to go hand in hand with that Doyle-as-gentle-waif view and belong to the early days of fandom.

Oh and 'favourite', yes I meant favourite as in 'favourite is' or 'favourite hobby horse' - that sort of sense :0)

(Sorry, posted comment in the wrong place previously)

Sadly we must wait until July for the DVDs - but at least we will get them!

Excellent news - there wasn't a dvd release date last time I looked. Thank you! (I bet people would like to know, if you posted to Safehouse, you know... *g*)

Really? I always assume everybody knows everything before me. But if you think so.....

OK, have just posted there. Has anybody ever mentioned that you are quite persuasive?

I do my best... *g*

The first I knew about Mark IV bluray dates was someone posting to Safehouse, and there's been nothing up about the dvds, which lots of people seemed to prefer and were waiting for, so I suspect I'm not the only one who doesn't know yet. And if I am, well it can't hurt to remind people... *g*

Although rats - I can't see your post coming up. Maybe it's got caught in their spam-posts if it contains a link. Hopefully one of the mods is watching and will get it out quick for us!
