I think I've probably recced this story every year that we've had a CI5hq advent calendar, but I don't care, I'm doing it again - it's so beautifully bittersweet. (I might have said this next bit last year too, but it's still true.... *g*)
It's like the Christmas baubles that shine jewel-like red and green - the colours are brighter when we see them against a dark background:
It was seasonably cold, the sky black and clear, the stars bright and chill, a stark forecast of frost. In the darkness Doyle walked along the embankment, hands in pockets, briskly; it was not the weather to dawdle. Bodie strode along at his side, keeping up without effort...
