Haven't been any recs here for ages, so let's have some! I'll start, with a story I suspect may have been overlooked, due to Christmas, its initial WIP status (it's now complete), and the lack of the newsletter to update people. It's a crossover, and what a choice of worlds to cross!

Title: For Queen And Country
Author: AnythingButPink
What: Crossover with Neverwhere
Where: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1065809/chapters/2138009

This is a crossover with Neverwhere, a series whose central premise is that there is a whole part of London which we, residents of London Above, don't see and don't know about, with its own rules of how things work. Only people on the margins of London Above know about London Below, and few people fall through the gaps from one to the other.

And then Bodie and Doyle stumble into it, meeting the Marquis de Carabas, who requires their assistance to protect the Queen - not the one in Buckingham Palace, but a queen in a realm where there is a bridge of night, not of knights*, London's underground rivers are still navigable, and there really are fairies at the bottom of the garden. London Below is a dangerous place.

“How long have you two been partners?”
Bodie glared at the Marquis. It was taking a huge effort to lower Doyle at a more sedate pace than gravity was demanding. “Over fifteen years,” he managed through a clenched jaw.
“Dangerous work is it?”
“Yep.”
“You put yourselves in harm's way for each other a lot?”
A shadow crossed Bodie's face. He nodded.
“If I can only save one of you. Which one should I choose?”
Bodie blinked, stared at the Marquis as if seeing him for the first time, and said, “Him. Obviously.”
The Marquis tilted his head and allowed a glimmer of a smile to crease his lips. “Understood,” he said.

I can't work out whether this is a crazy combination to cross over with each other, or an immediately obvious one, but either way, it works brilliantly. The voices are absolutely right, de Carabas is as unpredictable as ever, and I love the remarks from Bodie and Doyle as they try to get to grips with the world they have found themselves in.

So there: a story perhaps not everyone's seen, just in time for the weekend. Any more?

* Edited to fix the Knightsbridge reference, after re-reading the book and discovering I had it wrong!

Thank you! I remember starting this one, realising it wasn't complete, and putting it aside to come back to sometime when it was finished. Perfect for the weekend, ta ever so.

Excellent, nice to see some recs go up (and nice to find myself with a bit of time for lj before heading out of the YHA this morning, so maybe I'll get a chance to read this one - although maybe I should post, or catch up on emails... *dithers*). I've seen this one, but not read it, partly because I've not read Neverwhere yet (on the list), but maybe I'll read it anyway...

If you feel like some discussion too, here's a starter for ten - I do wonder if Bodie would answer "Him. Obviously." rather than just keeping quiet and looking away (though I appreciate he seems to have sussed out the Marquis' understanding/intent before answering, which makes a difference...)? I'm not sure I can see him being so open and honest about it, to be honest...

Ohh, interesting! I must admit I read this one when it was incomplete (did NOT look at the warning sign), and got a little past this point, which is quite a way into the story. So I think (a) not something that either one of them would say off the get go, but (b), they're well into the mission now and the Marquis is their guide/interpreter in London Below, so would that make a difference?

Glad to know the story's complete so I can go back and read it all.

I never look at warning notices, and it didn't occur to me that someone would "warn" that a story was a wip until I saw someone do it (obviously...*g*) - I probably didn't even realise in this case.

I'm not sure if it would make a difference for me, unless it turned out that the subject had come up in a way that would make it naturally part of a conversation, and even then I'm not sure - I tend to see them as very private about their relationship, I guess. In the context of this particular story I'll have to go and read it first, but in general... *g*

Open and honest about what? Caring for Doyle? Ah, well, the Marquis already knows about that...
Still haven't read it yet - today's a quiet day though, so I'm hopeful... But yeah - I'm just not convinced the lads would talk about their relationship to other people, whether those people knew they were in a relationship or not, however obliquely...

This sounds intriguing!

I haven't read Neverwhere but I've just recently listened to a radio adaptation so it's pretty fresh in my mind.

Thanks for the rec!

Squee! I adore Neverwhere, which I had as an audio book - daughter has lost it - and I must buy it for Kindle so thanks for that info too! The idea of it crossed with Pros just fills my heart with joy! I would never have started on a WIP - I aleady have a long Hobbit fic subscribed to and whilst it's nice getting the chapters as they arrive I don't think I'd cope with yet another... I usually bookmark WIPs and go back periodically to check. Anyway - I'm excited about this!

There seems to be something that connects them - an affinity composed of dark London, roses and lavender elsewhere, a kind of urban fantasy. Not sure but it works for me! Will let you know how I get on with the story!

See! This is where reading recs leads... I've ended up buying Neverwhere now, because I suddenly realised I'd never read it... *g*

Also, I meant to say what a good idea to get the recs going again now that Crack Van has trundled off into the sunset.

Thank you - I've only just twigged how good Kindle is on the iPad, so any excuse to download things I haven't tried is wonderful!

I was lining up a few recs too, meaning to sign up for another drive of the Van - I loved doing it so much last year, and now I'm just pleased I had at least one go. It would be lovely to manage a rec or two now and then - I tend to be so random *smacks self upside the head* *g*

So, never heard of Neverwhere, so got that on the Kindle and read it in just a few evenings - loved it! The only problem I have with the Kindle is that I can't indulge in my appalling habit of reading the last page! I just had to keep reading to find out what happened!

But I'd already read AnythingButPink's "For Queen and Country". Even though I didn't have any idea of the Neverwhere world, it didn't make the fic any less enjoyable. A good length story with a good plot and a happy ending. I thought the characterisation was spot on although I do wonder if Doyle would have been more questioning and possibly Bodie a little less accepting - not enough to worry, though. Thanks mlm for the rec, I need to find more from ABP as I really like her style.
RL far too busy at the moment, but I have enjoyed doing recs for The Reading Room. Thank you!

Thanks for the rec - bookmarked for now, as I want to listen to Neverwhere (the recent version, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Islington) before I read.

Thanks for the rec! I'm very fond of Neverwhere stories, so this crossover works well for me.
