Title: Redemption - Of A Sort
Author: LilyK
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle

From the very start of this story it's clear that something is not quite right. Doyle is standing outside Bodie's flat and is hesitating to go up. He wants to apologise for something but is afraid that Bodie won't let him in. I like how we do not know yet what Doyle needs to apologise for, but we get the feeling it must be something big if Doyle is afraid to even knock on Bodie's door.
Doyle finally makes up his mind when some young teenagers walk in ahead of him, opening the security door for him. Doyle heads up to Bodie's flat and it suddenly becomes clear that something may be amiss.
I love the way this is written as I can imagine Doyle's exact movements as he enters Bodie's flat. At this point in the story I was actually worried something had happened to Bodie too, but luckily it is soon apparent that Bodie is okay, well sort of. Bodie has been sitting in the Dark on his own and it's clear that he is not quite himself. We soon find out why...
Bodie had suffered today. Not only had his former lover been killed in front of him, but he'd been betrayed by his own partner. Doyle grimaced. He'd followed Bodie as if he were some common thug. Cowley's orders, but still, it didn't sit right, what he'd done.
For most of us, one episode will probably spring to mind upon reading that paragraph as it did for me. The following conversation our lads have soon reveals this story is linked with the episode "Fall Girl" and Marrika's Death which Bodie is taking pretty hard here. Doyle is at a loss of how to deal with this Bodie; he's not used to seeing him this way and you can tell he is very much concerned. I like how the conversation goes, it's something I think LilyK does very well in all that she writes. Through the conversation it is revealed Cowley knew Marrika was coming to England and that Cowley sent Bodie in to keep an eye on her.
"Played his infernal games. Pushed us about like pieces on a chess board. Set me- us up. He put me onto her, you know."
It adds something extra to the episode and I personally liked that as I've always wondered what they would have said to each after the episode ended.
Doyle can see Bodie is knackered and suggests he get some sleep while he makes some food and tea. Bodie doesn't sleep long though.
Doyle's reaction is exactly how I would imagine him reacting to Bodie saying such a thing.
"I don't want you to die."
It's such a small line and yet so meaningful.
It's very clear that Doyle cares very deeply for Bodie and he wants to fix things, to make Bodie feel better. Doyle knows what Bodie needs and they end up in bed together. Afterwards, as they lay next to each other Bodie asks whether this is a one of...
From this it's clear that Bodie cares for Doyle very much too. Doyle does as Bodie asks and says it's a one of and gets up and leaves.
"Just this once..." he said softly to himself before he added, "Love you, Bodie," Then he climbed into his car and drove away.
This story is so loving and yet so bitter-sweet and I truly enjoyed reading it. Though, I hear you ask, what does it have to do with Autumn? Well, 'Fall Girl' was filmed in October and 'Fall' is another word for Autumn which is stated at the end of the story. :)
So, what did everyone else think of the story?

After a parting glance, he put the group out of his mind and looked about him, unconsciously scanning his surroundings for anything out of the ordinary. Not sensing anything amiss, he took the steps two at a time, and once he reached the third floor, he walked down the hallway towards Bodie's flat. As he rounded the corner, he stopped dead in his tracks, quickly pulling his weapon. Bodie's door stood ajar, a dark, uninviting portal.
On full alert, Doyle edged forward, hugging the wall, grateful that his steps were muffled on the carpeting. Once he made his way to the entrance, he peered into the blackness.
No light filtered out, and as he listened, he couldn't detect any signs of life from within. He gripped his weapon firmly and cautiously pushed the door back against the wall.

Doyle can see Bodie is knackered and suggests he get some sleep while he makes some food and tea. Bodie doesn't sleep long though.
"Didn't sleep long," Doyle said.
Bodie shrugged, nibbling the edges of a piece of bread. "Sleep when I'm dead."
Doyle's hand froze halfway to his mouth and part of the hard-boiled egg he'd been eating fell from his fingers. "Don't joke about it."
Doyle's reaction is exactly how I would imagine him reacting to Bodie saying such a thing.

Bodie turned his face towards him. "This was a one off, Ray. Please," he begged. "Tell me it was a one off. You're not in love with me."
Doyle could see Bodie's eyes fill, and he was suddenly terrified. Bodie didn't get emotional, and this- This was almost as frightening as Bodie's disheartened behaviour earlier.
He swallowed around the lump in his throat before he asked, "Why?"
"Couldn't stand it. Couldn't take you dying. Not if we- Not if you loved me. Better it's just a, a pity fuck. Just between mates. Nothing else." Bodie rubbed a finger across his eyes, whispering, "If it had been you instead of her..."
From this it's clear that Bodie cares for Doyle very much too. Doyle does as Bodie asks and says it's a one of and gets up and leaves.

I agree!
But Fall Girl is an episode that really disturbs me and the story makes it even worse. (The content, not the style!!)
The lads are so cool to each other and they hide their plans and their feelings. What does Bodie say? "He put me onto her, you know." That means that right from the beginning Bodie kept the secret and hasn't talked to Doyle about it. Right from the beginning there is betrayal and no trust between them. And I'm sad about that!
But thank you for your rec!

You did a great job with the review/rec. I hope you will do more of them!

I love LilyK's writing style, and this is such a lovely bittersweet little fic. I think it works for me because it doesn't close them down at the end - there's still a feeling of hope, that Doyle will turn around and go back, just maybe not this time - and that's always vital for the optimist in me *g*
Thank you again for doing this - it's always nice to see what other people think.

Date: 2012-11-30 08:02 pm (UTC)I so agree with you about the ending. It leaves it open and gives us hope that maybe they will both be brave enough to get it together some time in the future. The way LilyK writes it as well is wonderful, I think I've enjoyed everything of hers that I've read. :D

Yes! That's just one of the things I liked about the story. I’ve got mixed feelings about this episode and I think it helped to answer some of my questions such as how *did* Bodie manage to turn up outside Marikka’s hotel and why did he seem so offhand and almost indifferent when he met her in the park and then in the hotel?
And I thought it was was interesting because it gave certain events a completely different interpretation and so provided much food for thought, e.g. Marikika's shouted warning to Bodie.
And it helped to smooth over certain irritations which I've often felt re episodes which involve either Bodie or Doyle being angry with each other for merely doing their job i.e. for having to obey Cowley's orders, the man who 'owns' them, body and soul and who should point that out a little bit more than he does when either of them are getting angry with each other:
"I'm not angry with you. I'm..." Bodie sighed, dropping his head back onto the sofa cushion. "I don't know what I am any longer. Fucked up, more than likely." He paused. "You knew about the arcade. You nabbed something more important than Mar- her. You nicked the evidence. Thanks to you, I'm a free man. Besides, all you did was keep her safe. At least, you thought that's what you were doing."
I've always felt this writer comes up with really interesting, original ideas for stories and this was another example.
Thanks for a very inspirational rec!
