Another zine rec
Mar. 7th, 2007 08:23 pmRainbow Chasers, by HG
AU, slash
The story is AU, insofar as Doyle does not work for CI5. The focus at the beginning is very much on Doyle, who works his way off the streets via a company which provides a variety of services to the wealthy. It is through this connection that he first meets Bodie, who is at the time using a different name and definitely not working for CI5. The circumstances surrounding this meeting preclude Doyle from recognising him again when they encounter each other after a gap of some years, although Bodie, now secure in his new identity as a CI5 agent, does recognise Doyle. The difficulties experienced by two strong, disparate personalities attempting to mesh their lives form the rest of the story, interwoven seamlessly with plausible cases and Cowley's efforts to persuade Doyle to join CI5.
HG is one of my favourite writers, and anyone with access to The Professionals Slash Fanfiction Archive on CD may already have come across "Strange Days Indeed" and "Jigsaw Puzzle", both fine examples of her work. "Rainbow Chasers", although AU, keeps the characterisation of Bodie, Doyle and Cowley absolutely spot-on, while also introducing a new character who must be among the best in Pros fanfic. Tony Sullivan is totally credible; a strong, attractive character who lives in his own right and almost makes you wish HG would write his back-story! I absolutely loved him, and his place in Doyle's life was beautifully drawn.
The story is long, well-paced, with an excellent combination of action, intrigue and angst, not to mention the hot, steamy slash and some humour for good measure. I particularly enjoy the dialogue she writes between Doyle and Cowley, although the interchanges between Bodie and Doyle are also extremely well done. She manages to make the simplest action speak so clearly, and her writing style is fluid, unobtrusive and polished.
There is so much to enjoy about this zine that I find myself re-reading it regularly with enormous pleasure.

Date: 2007-03-08 12:45 am (UTC)I love longer stories and have re-read this one several times - I echo the comments made about it above. HG is a wonderful writer - "Strange days indeed" and "Jigsaw puzzle" are also high on my list of favourites. Having read them several times on line, I have now given way to temptation and bought the zines, so I can settle down with them when I want to read something on paper!
Good choice and rec,
