CI5HQ Mini Review Challenge
Jul. 12th, 2012 04:10 pmI was in the mood for one of my absolute favourite comfort reads late last night - JoJo's Love in a Cold Country.
There's freezing snow-covered countryside; Bodie hurt, and stuck out in the open under fire; and Doyle trying to cope with the situation, whilst dealing with tragic memories of the past overlapping the present.
It's so good: understated, fabulous descriptions, lovely dry humour, Bodie with a beard... what? :D
My favourite line involves the beard... "Up close the new look leant Bodie the air of a particularly disenchanted and sleep-deprived Italian fisherman." See! *g*
ETA: Edited, because I'm an idiot and forgot to say - it's also slash, of the sweetest hottest kind.

Date: 2012-07-12 07:34 pm (UTC)I totally forgot to say it's slash *slaps wrist* - it's a great story, and just long enough to get your teeth into for half an hour or so. I hope you enjoy it too!

Date: 2012-07-13 11:20 am (UTC)It's such a lovely image of Bodie, isn't it? *g*
It's one of my absolute favourite stories, and one I go back to more than most. I love the byplay with Cowley too, which is very much canon, but seems to get lost in quite a lot of fiction.

Date: 2012-07-13 11:28 am (UTC)That's exactly how this story is for me - long after I've forgotten exactly what it's about, I still remember all sorts of parts of it - the taste of a baby's kiss; Bodie looking scruffy and sexy, and his moment with the radio out in the yard; the beard; Doyle comforting Bodie... so many lovely little details all crammed into one fic. Perfect!

Date: 2012-07-14 09:01 am (UTC)It's pretty much perfect, isn't it? I love the way parts of it stay with me... and Bodie in a beard? Oh yeah *g*

Date: 2012-07-14 09:04 am (UTC)Thank you for suggesting we play at this - there've been a couple of recs for things I've yet to read, and it's nice to be reminded of old favourites... the reading list grows again!
I know! The artwork is really old, and I have no idea now why I didn't at least try for a scruffy/bearded Bodie. *g* But I thought as I had it handy, I might as well chuck it in.
Edited, because LJ ignored me the first time... mutter mutter mutter!

Date: 2012-07-15 04:20 pm (UTC)When I haven't read it for a while, I find I've completely forgotten Doyle's family background, and it always comes as a lovely surprise all over again because of how well written it is.
So glad you enjoyed it too. *beams*

It's glorious, isn't it? You've picked out another bit I love, but it's all so beautifully written I could probably choose every other line.
