Okay, bit of a request for help here, and bit of a request just for fun. As you may or may not know, I've been putting together this Palelyloitering.com website thing-y, mostly because it seemed like the easiest way to make a Pros zine/story/author etc database for myself (it started way before Hatstand had its zines database - but even after that went up I decided to do a Magnus Magnusson and kept on going) and then because it occurred to me that other people might find it useful as well - if it ever gets finished, of course.

Also, a while ago, "Legacy of Temptation" and (even longer ago!) "Suitable Gravity", two absolutely brilliant fics from anthology zines, were archived online. I've completely fallen in love with them both, and they got me wondering what other gems are out there that are waiting to be archived online (and/or may never be). It's also been very quiet, rec-wise, here at CI5hq, and so I thought I might issue a challenge:

What is your favourite zine-fic-that-isn't-online? And for people who don't have zines to choose from, are there fics that you've heard about *from zines* that you'd really like to read?" (Please make a new post for your rec rather than just commenting, because unless anyone objects I shall link the recs to palelyloitering.com, so not only would you be helping my curiousity, you'd be contributing to the incredible-unfinished-big-website-of-links as well *g*)

(Edit - and if I'd been more awake when I posted this I would have properly credited [livejournal.com profile] izzie7 for setting this off by saying "wouldn't it be useful for palelyloitering if..."!)

Oddly enough, I was just thinking of this last night. I have lots of favorite stories from zines that are not yet available online. Can I list more than one? (Or maybe post more than once, given that I need to get to a meeting? *g*)

Quickly then:

1. "Spring-heeled Jack" by Georgina Kirrin - Motet for New Voices in B and D.
-Gorgeous stories; one of the best ever, in my opinion. Frankly, anything by Georgina Kirrin is lovely. And, in fact, I have to add another one in because it's a personal favorite:

"The Acorn Syndrome" by Georgina Kirrin - Motet Opus 2

2. "Groundhog Doyle" by Irene - Close Quarters
Again, anything by Irene, but this one has a charm that I fall for every time. It's like the movie, only better.

3. "The Larton Chronicles" by Rhiannon.
Of course.

4. "Yellow Brick Road" by Kate MacLean
My favorite of her stories.

More?

Of course, being a bit of a pervert and a shameless Bodie/Cowley lover, I would choose the second and third part of Jane Carnall's trilogy (in her Fox and Wolf universe): This classical dilemma and As games are played and the third one by preference (it can be read alone). But I strongly doubt my tastes would be shared by many. Too bad...

I hear there are some out there

If so, you know more than I do! I'd like to get in touch with them if they really do exist, something I doubt since they never come out.

Which zines are those in?

Both are stand alone zines, with probably a very small issue; I was very lucky to get them thanks to a kind soul who heard my laments. I started to type them but for me, it's a real hardship: I type with at snail pace.

I think that all three novels of the trilogy were issued as stand alone zines, but probably published almost privately by copying and forwarding them from one person to another. I got my copies from a seller specialised in gathering old issues of rare zines. Mines were wads of blurred photocopies in bad condition (but very cheap, I must say). That's why I wanted to type them.

I was informed about this ressource by Cat who is a friend of the author and wrote herself a story in "A Simple Game", a collection of sequels by various writers to "Look through my eyes", another very dark but outstanding B/C novel. There are the "soul mates" I am looking for, would you say? No, seems that none of them is interested in this universe or this fandom any more, not even the main author.

I read the discussion you raised on lists about this topic. Interesting, indeed. I love paper zines and still more books, and if I had the skill, I'd like to make real books with my favourite stories.

So every story in "A Simple Game" is a sequel to "Look Through My Eyes"?

Yes, it was made just for this purpose and I warn you: don't ever try to read "Look through my eyes" without the sequels if you don't want to spend the night sobbing in despair! Serious. The worrying thing is the dark ending has no necessity at all and comes abruptly, as everything seemed until now to be leaning to a more happy ending. I couldn't ask the author why, because with my usual lack of diplomacy, I had managed to exasperate her with my comments about her stories (I really managed to irritate a writer with praises; that's a record!). There is among the stories a sequel with a very good plot but a rather dull style (nothing's perfect) and the author's own sequel is satisfying as it is a happy ending (at last!) but don't fit with her previous clues...Anyway you should try to read the first novel and its two sequels (there are other in "A simple Game" but less thrilling); it's a great piece of work for everybody interested in Cowley's character.

If an individual staples together their fic, and sends it out into the wide world to be copied at will...

I am not sure the zines I was mentionning were published that way; simply they were provided to me that way and I got the impression it was how they were issued at the beginning, because of the bad appearance of the copies, but there is no certainty and now, I can't ask the persons involved.

I've always liked "Devil's Walk" by P Willow which can be found in the first Diamyien. It's a wonderful AU novella with an intriguing plot, good characterizations of the lads, interesting secondary characters, and an exotic locale. The story is set primarily at a chess tournament in Bangkok. Doyle is trying to recover from a CI5 op gone terribly wrong, which resulted in his partner's death and left him with a bad knee. While waiting for his resignation papers to go through, he accepts an invitation to play at the chess tournament and takes his first trip outside England despite being physically below par. There he is alternately intrigued and infuriated by a mysterious, shady character who aids him at the airport and later rescues him from local thugs. I don't want to spoil the rest of the story but it's a great read with everything from Eastern medicine, unorthodox rehabilitation techniques, to hot sex.
