Reading Room IX - Fusion Stories

I was going to post this tomorrow, but my flist is so quiet at the moment that I'm going to post now!

Eight out of eighteen respondents voted to carry on with Fusion Stories, as planned. Four people voted for Cross-overs, and don't worry, we'll simply move on to them next, also as originally planned! One person hoped we could come back to Stories where the lads are outed sometime, and I'm sure we can!

So - what is a Fusion story? As mentioned over at the last post (and in the comments!), it's a reworking of another story, a fic where the lads are put into another story, as the characters of that story. (In a cross-over, by comparison, they're generally added to the story as new, additional characters - that's why one of them is sometimes missing, to accommodate their role in the other cross-over story).

There's a list of some fusion stories over here at the Hatstand, and an example that you can read online would be M.Fae Glasgow's Screwged - or Nanny's Christmas Carol. In this story, Doyle is given the role of Scrooge, and Bodie Christmas Past and Present, and then Cowley is the ghost of Christmas Future. In another example, The Ghost and Mrs Muir has been reworked to become The Ghost and Mr Doyle, where the part of Captain Gregory is taken by Bodie, and Doyle plays the equivalent of Mrs Muir.

And there are many more fusion stories out there than just those on the Hatstand list, which I don't think has been updated for a whilst, so I'm sure we can add to it! Please comment below, especially with:
1 - fusion story suggestions, to make a list, and
2 - volunteers to review/rec a story one Thursday over the next month or so

If you want to make a judgment call on my story, The Letter Box, to decide if it's a fusion story, then if you want to use it, that's fine. It's a "film fic" meaning I took the movie and got rid of their characters and "Professionalised" it. I won't lead or participate in a discussion about my own story, however. I feel it stifles the conversation. But it's fair game. *bg*

I don't think I've read that one - but if you tell me it's based on a film using the lads instead of the original characters, then it sounds like a fusion story to me... *g*

msmoat and I were talking about author involvement in reviews/discussions of their own work just the other week. I can see how some people might feel "stifled", but to be honest I feel just as "stifled" knowing that the author is currently active in fandom and will be reading the review, whether she takes part or not... In fact, the more I think about it, the more I'd rather have the author take part, because then I could ask them questions that I might not feel able to raise knowing they were reading but not going to reply/comment... All of which is why I tend to avoid reviewing stories by currently active authors, really... *g*

I love fusion stories :) And I have Unprofessional Conduct 5. Plus, 'The Ghost and Mrs Muir' is one of my favourite films, so I'd love to review 'The Ghost and Mr Doyle.' Could I take the 29th March, if that suits?

Actually, I've just been over to palelyloitering to find a link, and came across something I've not noticed before. The Ghost and Mr Doyle (http://www.palelyloitering.com/Fic/ghostandmrdoyle.htm) is listed as being by Gena Fisher, and written in the zine You Must Remember This (http://www.palelyloitering.com/zines/youmustrememberthisprosmovienight.htm), which I own, but have left in Alaska (stupid, stupid...), and for a long time I could have sworn that's where I remembered the story from. But I know I've most recently read it and loved it in Unprofessional Conduct 5 (http://www.palelyloitering.com/zines/unprofessionalconduct05.html), as you say - only now I see that it's listed as The Ghost and Raymond Doyle (http://www.palelyloitering.com/Fic/ghostandraymonddoyle.htm) in that zine! Which means that not only have I been giving the wrong title all along up above, but that I'm now rather confused! I need to find a copy of the Gena Fisher story, don't I... *g*

Why aren't you qualified to review anything? You read stories, don't you? Please don't be shy - choose a story you like (or hate... *g*) from the list (I'm adding a copy of the Hatstand list to the post above, which will be a start for people who aren't sure) and you can make as small a post as you like "Here's this fic - I really liked it cos it made me feel happy, lots of love GB" would do - it's basically just a prompt for other people to read the story and then agree or disagree. I never do terribly in depth reviews myself... *g*

But we need people to post - it seems as if most of the regulars aren't able to manage it at the moment, and if no one's willing to post, then there's nothing for anyone else to read!

Well, unqualified more because I can't think of any "fusion" stories!

...Okay, technically speaking Arabian Nights should fall under this - it's based on two silent films (if I'm interpreting the definition correctly). If I can come up with a short blurb this weekend, I'll see if this will work.

Ah - there's lots over in the Hatstand list, and the link is in my post. She doesn't always put links to those online, but lots of them are on the ProsLib CD too, which hopefully you've got (it's definitely worth getting hold of, if not).

I've always assumed that Arabian Nights was at least loosely based on some other specific story, but I've never known how specific that was - if you recognise the source material though, then go for it!

I haven't read anything listed, though. :(

5/14 of the stories above are online - but I've only started listing the stories that have been mentioned at Hatstand, and I know there are more there that are online. I also know that there are more recent fusion stories that have been posted (come to that, I wrote one myself *g*) that are online - someone mentioned the Jane Austen story, the other day, I can't remember who it was by and I've not had time to go back and add to the list myself yet, but it was in the comments to the first post I made mentioning fusion stories.

There's lots of fusion stories readily available, but you might have to check the lists for yourself to find the rest... I'll try and get some more listed today, but I can't promise...
