Since I first found Pros fic, I've loved AUs. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but for me, Bodie and Doyle (and often Cowley) seem to fit beautifully into any universe a good writer cares to place them. And I'm always fascinated by the different jobs they're given within various universes and eras, so I was thinking... it might be interesting to have a list of all the different jobs our boys have had in AU fics. *g*

Oh, wow, this project would take years! LOL! Are you considering fusion stories?

What a lovely idea! Others will know lots more than me, but these are some more of my favourites:

Sarah K 'Of Angels and Angles' http://archiveofourown.org/works/113554
Bodie: bounty hunter, Doyle: mechanic

Claire Dobbin 'A Chance of Fate' http://hatstand.slashcity.net/claire/chance1.html
Bodie: Russian aristocrat, cavalry officer Doyle: political dissident artist

Sally Fell 'Hazardous Fortune' http://hatstand.slashcity.net/sally/hazardous1.html
Bodie: retired Army officer, Doyle: An Orphan

Mine are historical or scifi, though - did you mean to limit it to contemporary era stories?

What a cool idea! And interesting... so far, with some notable exceptions, it seems that Doyle's often the artistic, cerebral one and Bodie is either action or aristocracy *g* ... stand by for examples of where the opposite is true :D

What a great story list idea! Let's see... *g*

- Doyle's also a trapeze artist in Harlequin Airs

- Doyle's a ghost hunter/researcher/writer in Birdwatcher's Guide to Cornish Ghosts, and
- Bodie's a country gentleman and ornithologist

- Doyle's a lighthouse keeper in Keeper (http://www.palelyloitering.com/Fic/keeper.html) and
- Bodie's a sailor

I'm rushing to get lunch, but I suspect I'll be back soon... *g*

I love lists and I think this is a brilliant idea, especially if we can join in and contribute. Talking of lists, you could almost form a separate list for Bodie as 'merc' starting with:

Meg Lewtan's Out of the Jungle on the CD

Not online:
Meg Lewtan's Bird in a Gilded Cage - Bodie as valet (I think)
Meg Lewtan's Murder on the Moor - Bodie as GP (I think)
O Yardley's The Highwayman - Bodie as (yes, you guessed it) the highwayman and Doyle as lawyer's clerk. (I wonder why it's never the other way round?)

Lizzie's The Victorian Kitchen Gardener - Bodie as gardener
http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/6/thevictorian.html

JoJo's Lifelike - Bodie as artist's model
http://hatstandfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=876&chapter=1

Courtney Grey's Night Moves - Bodie as high class male prostitute
Haven't got the link but I'm sure I'll be back...

Doyle as prostitute in the lovely Roman soldier story....Miles something unpronouncable..

Doyle as artist in Alexandra's The Art of Love
http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/0/theart.html

Bodie as mutinous sailor in The True Confessions of Raymond Doyle by tears_of_nienna http://tears-of-nienna.livejournal.com/381641.html?format=light

I'm baaaack:
Miles Scortillusque by Sineala Bodie as Roman soldier and Doyle as prostitute http://hatstandfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=407&chapter=1

Night Moves - Courtney Gray - Bodie as high class escort/prostitute
http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/1/nightmoves.html

(Are you beginning to wish you'd never start this?!)

Hope this list will get archived - it's the kind of thing that should be preserved!

If you're counting crack, there's always Bodie as Tarzan and Doyle as Lost Explorer ... but damn, I can't remember the title at the moment.

Excellent list!
I always love these as inspiration for what to read next!

In this year's Big Bang, Judes wrote an AU with Doyle as an aspiring singer, and Bodie as a theatre producer:

I just came back to add "Two Lovers' by O. Yardley, and I see you've already got it, but their historical selves are different too:

Bodie: canal lengthsman*
Doyle: canal boatman

(*googling "canal length man" to get this right proved educational!)

oh, and another fave: "Non Nobis, Domine" by Cassie Ingaben
http://hatstand.slashcity.net/cassie/nobis.pdf

both are Knights Templar monks

The Captive Heart by Elessar. Bodie is a king, Doyle a servant, but really a king as well.

There is another in a futuristic setting. Bodie is a smuggler, Doyle works for the galactic army? Can't think of the name right now.

I have one, I have one!

In Gravity's Angel - by Anonymous on the CD - Doyle is a "successful commercial photographer" who takes photos of bands and models in the early 80s. *Not* the one where he is on a year-long undercover op as a photographer who ends up photographing Bodie's SAS troop. In this one, Bodie is CI5 (not that Doyle knows that) and Doyle is not, and Doyle is targetted by bad guys as a result.

Bit late, so I hope you see this :)

The Schoolmaster by Maddalia at Archive of Our Own. "ENGLAND, 1829. Raymond Doyle, a young schoolmaster, accepts a post as tutor to a rich man's ward. When he meets that rich man, whose name is Bodie, it turns his life upside down."

Cook and Warehouseman by Helen Raven? Futuristic Bodie in CI5, Doyle the prince from and alien race.

From: [identity profile] moonlightmead.livejournal.com
Hey, where's Heat-Trace (http://www.kelper.co.uk/helenraven/trace.html)? Bodie's CI5, but Doyle: policeman (not in the Drugs Squad)

From: [identity profile] moonlightmead.livejournal.com
On a roll today! The Sorceror's Web (Liz Bradford, from Gryphon): Doyle is a Tendra scout (aka ranger) and Bodie is... well, what? An assassin, definitely. And a magician, only he doesn't know that.

And in Rhiannon's Music in the Dark (Unprofessional Conduct 1), Doyle is in CI5, but Bodie is the proprietor of The Moorland Café in Derbyshire (and reluctant provider of succour to travellers, but whether the café is actually a hotel, I am not sure...)

Date: 2012-02-22 12:52 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nypagan.livejournal.com
Temple of Venus by Lizzie. Doyle is in CI5, Bodie owns an estate that he rents out for conferences.

Date: 2012-03-05 09:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlightmead.livejournal.com
More Than Just A Holiday Romance, Darby Brennan: Bodie is a civil servant (a real one! - accountant working in the FO) and Doyle is a hotel owner.

Date: 2012-06-15 11:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] moonlightmead.livejournal.com
And more!

Fraternité, by Jasper (in Continental B&D): French Revolution AU. Beaudie is a soldier. Raymond Davanne (why Davanne?) is an artist now working as a prison warder.

Hi, I'm Airelle, and I'd like to participate in that discussion. I'll register as soon as I understand how to do it

Did you add all the new stories to the master list for the au "jobs for the boys"? I tried to look, but couldn't find it, so did someone mention AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (I can provide the author's name if need be and if it hasn't already been provided) where Bodie is in CI5 and Doyle is an artist. It's based on the movie by the same name, and it's a really wonderful read.

Until later
Airelle

Airelle again
Has someone answered about fusion stories? Those are stories where the characters from one series (say, The Professionals) are "imported" into another series' universe (say, Babylon 5), while retaining all the characteristics of their original universe, and sometimes even their names. For me it's a kind of AU, a sub-genre of AU if you will.

There's also SHIP OF FOOLS, where Bodie, strangely, is a famous painter (usually, that's more up to Doyle's alley) and Doyle is... I can't remember exactly, I think he's a lord or something and doesn't have a real occupation, besides travelling with his widowed aunt (whose spouse was a female - nice touch, I thought). And Cowley is a brain surgeon in this story. LOL, not so far from some of the things he does in the series, with his triple think !
Oh, and I guess I do have a lj account. Have to dig up the name and codes.

I love your list (well, I love lists, anyway...) Palely Loitering has a lot of lists on it, but I think not this one. Would you think about adding it here? And maybe grouping the occupation by stories (ie, if you want to know what both are in some stories, it would be easier to have both their occupations under the story name). Just a suggestion, of course, you're already doing a great job about it! I'll see if I can think of other stories not yet included in your list.

Just thought about another one
Encounter in Cascade and its sequel, Encounter in Eastland (both are on AO3)
It's a fusion story of sorts, and an AU of sorts. Both Doyle and Bodie assume new identities after Bodie is supposedly dead. In fact, having been wounded on the job and crippled, he emigrated to the US and became a teacher in Cascade (CX with the Sentinel, although we see very little of the characters of the Sentinel, except Simon). Doyle, believing Bodie dead, leaves CI5 and with Cowley's help, assumes a new identity. He becomes... Alan Cade, chief constable in Eastland (The Chief, starring MS). So, teacher and Chief Constable. And a happy ending, too!
