Reading Room VI - The Lads In Other Times

We've come to the end of the last Reading Room theme, and the next one on our list was Time Travel/Historical AU stories - are people still up for that? Do you want another Reading Room?

And most importantly - would anyone like to volunteer to post about/rec/review a story one week? We need to fill (and more if people want!):

(Just to clarify the theme - the original theme proposed was "Time Travel", which was then expanded slightly to mean the lads in any times past, for example in a historical AU fic, so really it's pretty loose, but means any fic about the lads not mainly set in canon times!)

What do you think? Would you like to play?

Yes, I want a reading room. What a silly question. Especially one which involves Kitty Fisher fics. Ahem. Although looking at the list, there's a lot of fun stuff here. I can see it running and running. Many of them are quite long, though. It might be an idea to nominate a short one for this week?

I can think of another Roman one, too, btw: Sineala's brilliant Miles Scortillusque at http://hatstandfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=407 .

I can perhaps manage a post for the 22nd or 29th. Quite possibly one of the Kitty Fisher ones, but there are so many others to choose from too.

I think you're right about having a shorter fic this week (if anyone chooses to do this week), and I'd hope that the volunteer would take that into account... *g*

Is the POM one the recent publication from Gryphon? Okay, that gives me both time and justification for ordering it now.

But shouldn't we make a break during October, with all the expected fab BigBang stories?
Last year I managed to read them all(except 2 or 3 I didn't wanted to). And I plan to try the same this year! :-)
I think there are many others with the same problem.

Lol - I don't think reading stories and chatting about fic is exclusive. I sometimes feel like doing one but not the other, for instance, so I don't think everything else in Pros needs to freeze whilst the Big Bang stories come out...

That has nothing to do with 'freezing', but with simple maths.
Fact is, that I only have a certain amount of time for Pros. And the BigBang is a special event in the year. I want to enjoy and honour it properly by reading and commenting, because it is realised with so much love and skill - by us! Pros fans united! ;-)

Well, the Pros comms are mostly about uniting Pros fans in general, so hopefully that's happening all the time anyway! The Big Bang is certainly a special event for some people, and reading and commenting there is good. I know what you mean about wanting time to enjoy and honour the stories, but everyone does that in their own way, and much as I love reading fic I don't necessarily want to devote a month to doing that and nothing else Pros-y. There may or may not be other people who feel the same way, so there's surely no reason why we should limit the options for people to choose. The more that's out there, the merrier, after all, and then we make our own decisions on how and when to interact with it.

Ah, sweet penance indeed! *g* Would you like to do Thursday October 27th, then? This is turning out to be a very good Reading Room theme!

There are a few time travel stories - one by... Pamela Rose, I think, where there's going to be a nuclear holocaust and the lads are sent back in time to avert it, to WWII I think. Jane Mailander wrote "The Quanta Leap" series, where the lads go back to various times, as in the tv series "Quantum Leap". Erm... I think there's time travel in Through the Looking Glass by... Felicity Parkinson? There are more, I think, but that's what comes to mind right now! Oh - and there's the story someone posted about the other week somewhere, which isn't really time-travel but has Bodie remembering the past lives that he and Doyle have had... I should do a separate Storylist for those, shouldn't I - tomorrow! *g*

I assumed all the stories were available on line; it's a necessary condition for me to do the rec; ordering zines from abroad is a real ordeal (you have to pay more for the money transfer than for your purchase itself).

I think some are online, or on ProsLib - I don't have time to check right now, but let me see what I can look out for you (I need to get the list up at palelyloitering.com anyway, and I don't think I've done that universe there yet). I'll let you know later today, if that's okay! But no - we wouldn't expect you to rush out and buy the zines to do it, especially as I suspect most of them are out of print now, too!

I need your help now. I searched both the Circuit and Proslib for Jane Mailander; they have the same stories but none has anything to do with Quantum Leap. There is a cross-over with Watership Down that I'd like to read because I love this epic saga about rabbits but it's fantasy, not time travel. The QL/Pros cross-over series is not even mentioned in the (updated) Proslib list of cross-overs.

Hiya - how frustrating that the stories aren't online after all. I must admit that I didn't look, but I thought that alot of her fic was online...

I can get you a copy of the first Quanta Leap story (Boyz in the Hood) but annoyingly enough I've left the other zines I have with her Quanta Leap stories in Alaska... Perhaps you could do Boyz in the Hood and ask if anyone's read any of the others as part of the discussion?

Odd that ProsLib doesn't list the stories, as they're listed at Hatstand (http://hatstand.slashcity.net/lists/series.html) (scroll down to Quanta Leap) and I thought it was Nell_Howell (now Istia) who compiled both... I think that's why I've not got them up at palelyloitering () yet, I didn't bring B and D's Excellent Adventures with me home to the UK, and I don't have the later Chalk and Cheese zines... Oddly, Fanlore doesn't have them listed either (though I know they copied alot of palelyloitering, and I'm sure Hatstand, for their information, so presumably that's why...). My next stage in life-consolidating is to get all my things back from Alaska - but that doesn't help you...

As I said earlier, we certainly wouldn't expect anyone to spend money on something they wouldn't otherwise buy just to do a Reading Room - particularly for a story they've not even read yet! But then most people choose stories that they have already read... *g*
