Poorly Lads Storylist - continuing!
Mar. 14th, 2011 02:34 pmWe're going such great guns on the Poorly Lads storylist, that the comments are concertina-ing, and I'm getting worried in case I've missed some - so I thought I'd re-post the list-so-far, and ask for additions in the comments here, please!
After all, who can resist the kind of h/c and partner-worry that comes with poorly lads..? *g*

Date: 2011-03-15 04:30 am (UTC)Huh, I didn't know that. I'm going to guess it has something to do with identity and worry of their real lives being connected to fandom?
I feel weird about buying zines or anything fandom-related, mainly because I work in an industry of writers and artists. Fandom has an interesting relationship with TPTB. Depending on how technical you wanna get, fanfics, fanart, etc. are infringing on copyright despite our disclaimers, but TPTB closes an eye because, well ... fandom isn't supposed to make any money off it, period. The instant you do, you're pretty much using someone else's characters and work to profit for yourself, and that is a huge no-no to TPTB.
On the other hand, as someone who is in fandom, I also get why fans who don't want their stories online sell zines instead. Printing costs money, and indie printing isn't cheap unless you don't mind your books/zines having crap quality. I guess some would argue that selling zines would make very tiny profit that doesn't make a difference to TPTB ... but the point is still that someone is earning money off characters and work they don't own.
And to answer your question, I'm always up for a well-written, really long story about the lads ... but only to the extent that I don't have to pay money for it and therefore cross the line of IP rights infringement. I'm probably in the minority in regards to this issue due to my work. It might not be such a big deal to others in fandom. *shrug* This is where my professional world bumps with my fandom world, heh.

Date: 2011-03-15 08:43 am (UTC)I absolutely agree that no one should be making a profit from selling zines, and I think that some zine publishers do (and let's not get started on the ebay sellers). It all depends on the definition of "profit" though - if I pay someone literally for the cost of paper and ink, then I'm not paying them for the story, just the means to read it. On the other hand, if I'm paying for the paper, ink, a ticket to the convention where the zine will be sold, a bookshelf on which to keep the zines before posting, and the most up to date software because the publisher thinks it looks nicer using that - then I've started paying for things that aren't simply about access to the story.
Cf story access online - we all pay for our internet access, or our kindles, or however we want to read fic. To me that's comparable to the paper and ink, and doesn't count as contributing to someone's profit. If someone asked me to pay to access their webpages to help them pay for their internet costs in uploading stories, then that would be them asking for help with a lifestyle rather than the stories...
And rats - I was interrupted and I have to rush off - will finish later!

Date: 2011-03-15 01:47 pm (UTC)Whoa, that is a lot to pay for a fan zine. Please tell me this isn't the usual case for Pros zines? It's kinda crazy if it is. Convention tickets can be pretty pricey, for one ...

Date: 2011-03-16 08:24 am (UTC)The discussion about chronic illness fics in the Pros fandom prompted me to look up the same sort of fics in the S&H fandom too, and I came across this cancer-centric one that was just heart-rending. It was what prompted me to leave the previous comment to you, wondering about the lack of such stories in the Pros fandom because of their depressing nature.
And sure! Feel free to quote me.

Date: 2011-03-18 04:14 am (UTC)Watching B&D together, a few years later and now as an adult, I can almost see the desire for the actors/characters to have that connection. But, as you say, I think there was a British restraint.

Date: 2011-03-16 10:28 am (UTC)Good question about Plague House... d'you know though, I'm thinking not, because I don't think the focus is really on the illness itself, it's more on... well I'm not one hundred per cent sure what it's on, but if I go back to the heading of the storylist it's not on the lads being poorly! What d'you think? (To be honest I can rarely get very far reading this one, cos to me it's so not Pros and I find it frustrating trying to follow the language the author's used...)
