[identity profile] byslantedlight.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] ci5hq
Following on from a sideways sort of request made yesterday, I said I'd have a go at making a list of stories where the lads are seriously ill or injured for [livejournal.com profile] nypagan. Her original question was:

There are so many H/C stories involving the boys. Has anyone made a list broken down by type of injury/wound/illness/etc... ? Are there any where one of them has a serious illness (cancer, MS, HIV) other than the hepatitis and head injury stories?

I've listed a few under the cut - and I know there's one where Bodie's face is injured quite badly, and another where I think one of them is permanently blinded, but I can't for the life of me remember what they were... Help? And please help think of some more, for [livejournal.com profile] nypagan!

Not that I've read most of it, but there's Gentle on My Mind by Kathy Keegan with brain-damaged Doyle. It also has a sequel by another writer whose pen name I can't remember.

Bodie is blinded in one fic but I'm blanking on the title.

Yet again I can't remember the title, but there's a story where Doyle becomes very ill with a serious illness and disappears. Bodie tracks him down to a cottage in Devon or Cornwall. From what I recall, the illness is treatable with lots of medication and hospital visits, so it might not count . . .

Another circuit story iirc.

"...Doyle becomes very ill with a serious illness and disappears. Bodie tracks him down to a cottage in Devon or Cornwall" I remember it vaguely. Wasn't Doyle married with an English woman, and she died?

Doesn't 'non-serious' illness or injury cover just about every H/C fic ever written?

This list would be more manageable if you keep it to chronic/terminal illness or disability.- gawd, how did we get on to such a depressing subject?

Now I think of it, I'm sure I read a fic recently with Bodie suffering bouts of recurrent malaria and not wanting to let on he was ill.

Umm... there's my Hunting of the Wren (http://hatstandfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=327&chapter=1) over at the Automated Hatstand, where Bodie's been injured in a car accident.

Don't know if that counts, though, as it's more about getting Bodie to safety?

For a H/C story fan like me, this is the perfect list! Here are some that come to mind for me (and spoilerish so don't read ahead if you don't want to be spoilt!):

No Option (http://www.thecircuitarchive.com/tca/archive/13/nooption.html) by PJ - Plane crash, Bodie is quite badly injured and is cared for by Doyle in a rough environment

Easy Prey by Jaicen - Lots of H/C featuring Doyle recovering from forced drug abuse and Bodie getting beaten and badly hurt by a big meanie

Strange Days Indeed by HG - A classic!

Heaven is a Place on Earth by LilyK - Poor Bodie, missing teeth and hurting while the cold gets to him ...

Blood Still Cries by Debra Hicks - Bodie gets shot and has to escape from an assassin with Doyle's help

If not, I consider "Redemption" a permanent disability story (serious depression and possibly other mental issues for Bodie).

This is fantastic! So much work in so short a time! I admire you!

I can think of two stories that would fit under "Drug abuse/Addiction, but I am really bad with titles and authors.
One is a longer story, where both are being kidnapped by somebody who takes revenge of Bodie first by beating Doyle up badly, then raping Bodie. One of his men betrays him and get´s Bodie and Doyle out of there to a cottage way out in the country. He gives drugs to Doyle, and Bodie doesn´t realise it until Ray is in way over his head.

The second one is a drabble maybe, or something shortish, where Bodie has to rescue Doyle from Cowley, because he took drugs by accident in an undercover, and he babbles on about parrots and other nonsense things, but whatever they were looking for is inside a parrot cage and Murphy has to get it out.

I´ll try to find the titles, but I read so much during the last year....
Thanks so much for going through all the trouble and starting a list like that!
Uh, there are still sooooo many stories I haven´t read yet.

There is a story in Unprofessional Conduct 12 called "Independence Day" by Eve Abel where Bodie is permanently blinded.

There is also "The Best of Intentions" by Ann O'Nimus (this one is on the Proslib cd), where Bodie suffered terrible injuries.

to elaborate:
No Regrets and Another One Bites The Dust - D is blind
Morning Glory - B is blind

Tears And Tribulations - B has been crippled by being shot in the knee
To Err Is Human - D has been crippled by a shot to the knee; subsequently B is seriously injured; both are invalided out of CI5

a couple of additions:
Green Fingers by Jane (not sure if this was in a zine or the paper circuit) - D is invalided out of CI5 with a broken back

Mr. Doyle's Neighborhood series (first story is Oh! To Be In Surbiton) by Kate Nuernberg in the British Takeaway zines (these are GEN so you may not want to list them) - D is invalided out of CI5 with a gunshot to the thigh, he suffers from depression

Ninetynine Yew Trees (http://hatstandfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=785) by [livejournal.com profile] draycevixen features a seriously-injured Bodie resigning from CI5, and Doyle wanting to cut all ties with him. It was written for the Big Bang challenge last year and is just brilliant.

I don't know if this one is considered H/C (normally this story gets categorised under the Letters category):
No Unicorns (http://hatstand.slashcity.net/hg/unicorns.html) by Sebastian and HG – the lads write to each other as Bodie is away on a case and Doyle is stuck in hospital recovering from a shooting.

Sorry Jaycat! I'm a sucker for h/c angst. I vaguely remember the malaria one as well, but not the title.
Alone Again by Ice Bear, Awakenings, Blood and Fire by PFL, Common Law by ILWB, A Different kind of Game by DVS. There is also an S&H crossover with a plane crash near the end of the story that both boys recover from. Odds Against by Tasha.

Late to the party as ever! Sorry, have been flaked out for a couple of days. But I'm bookmarking this list as a useful aide-memoire for my favourite genre!!!
Has anyone mentioned "The Story of my life?" by PJ - in the Circuit Archive. It's (much)older lads, Doyle with a serious heart condition and erm... yes, it's a death fic too. But it's so poignant and a certain song, which I just had to download from I-tunes, always goes through my head as I read it!
And there is a sequel to Bittersweet, simply called Bittersweet 2, also on the Proslib cd and in which Bodie is injured in a car accident and is in a coma.
I've just finished re-reading Saints and Miracles, which I don't think has been mentioned and where Doyle is badly injured in ski-ing accident and where that is central to the plot.
Firestorm by Elspeth Leigh? Doyle is injured both in the present day and in flashback.
Sorry not to post links and if these have already been mentioned, am sneaking in from work in my coffee break!
I will see whether I can dredge any more from my creaking memory!
