This is one of my very favorite Pros Christmas stories, and I still remember what a rollercoaster is was during my first read.
It's Christmas Eve and all is not well.
Bodie and Doyle have just come off an op, ending rather in an upsetting way, after being on observation for fourteen days, trading shifts, locked together in a tiny cottage.
Bodie has become more and more conscious of his partner, and the proximity is making him realize that he wants more. Much more than he is sure Doyle will ever be willing to give.
So, when Doyle invites Bodie over for Christmas Day, Bodie declines:
"Wait a minute," Bodie protested with equal parts exasperation and dread. He couldn't spend any more time in the man's company. He would never survive it. Neither would their partnership. "Wait just one minute. Did you ever stop to think I might want to spend the day at my own place--sleep in, get some rest?"
They part, with Doyle very hurt, and Bodie relieved, but feeling guilty and thinking his life would be so much easier if Doyle wasn't around, making him want the impossible.
Bodie falls asleep to Dickens' Christmas classic on the telly.
And from here, the story unfolds...

I've never read this story but from the way you've ended your rec and taking a little peek at it, it looks very intriguing so thank you for pointing me towards it!

Date: 2010-12-07 08:03 pm (UTC)Although I remember it quite well, it's surprising how much more there is to find in this story with subsequent reads.

The first read made me rush through, because for a while I wasn't quite sure if the one part was real or not, but later reads were more leisurely and there are so many things to find and enjoy in this story.
