Ravenstone’s Halloween drabbles have just the right touch of spookiness and often allude to our primal fears.
raven_rs has a great way of playing with familiar tales or literature, which makes the reader feel right at home in the scene she’s setting, seemingly crossing familiar waters. Then she goes and adds that little extra, that twist which makes the drabbles and stories unique and so very Pros. Even in a few short sentences we can recognize the lads rightaway. Short they may be, but the stories surely leave a lasting imprint on the reader’s mind.
Of the drabbles, I can especially recommend On Dartmoor if you want that little shiver running down your spine, but they’re all very worth reading.
Death and the Magician - which is a Professionals/Hellblazer/Sandman crossover - is a great little tale even if you’re not familiar with the characters of John Constantine or Death, whose voices Ravenstone has down pat.
It’s a gamble for life and death, and the reader takes the place of an onlooker, observing the actions of Bodie and Doyle through the eyes of another. The supernatural element opens the way for a whole range of philosophical ponderings about life, death and fate if the reader is so inclined, and gives the story a bit of an epic feel.
