Pros slash fanvids - a list
Sep. 4th, 2009 11:45 amDiscovering Pros fanvids on Youtube was 'the door in the wall' that let me in to the secret garden of slash/fandom/Pros, in summer 2008. I still adore the vids, but now I keep watching the same favourite ones over and over. After a year and a bit, I found myself wishing for more slashy ones to add to my collection. Y
At the start, I was thinking in terms of maybe half a dozen Pros slash fanvids, but when I thought harder my list soon grew to nearly 20. The exercise of finding links for them all was quite inspiring and led me to yet more…
The utter and complete list of Pros fanvids (slash, gen, whatever) is at the Hatstand: http://hatstand.slashcity.net//vids.html.
My list is based on what is readily available online. Let me apologise in advance if I have infringed any vidder's wishes regarding distribution of their vids by including links, and I will remove them at once if asked. Since I have found these vids either through YouTube or the Hatstand, I assume they are in the public domain and I can list them with links here.
My list is also a subjective one because, in the process, I’ve found it isn’t always clear whether a vid is made with slash in mind. I imagine a vidder who did not care for slash or intend to depict it would not be pleased if their work was received as such. Hence I took quite a narrow view, but still there are caveats below.
Any corrections of course will be gratefully acknowledged.
And I must say a huge thank you to all the vidders, who put so much technical skill and artistry, time and effort, into these confections.
If there is any point to this list, it is to identify the slashiest (online) vids from the Hatstand list. In return, I hope for reccs for any good ones I’ve missed.

Date: 2009-09-04 01:46 pm (UTC)"I think of all those vids as slash..." This is what I mean about subjectivity, and I did take a narrow view. This is my fault for not defining the subject...
If the vidder is into slash, but one of their vids is mainly about car chases, or shooting, or some other theme, where neither the lyrics/music nor the editing is particularly suggestive about the lads' relationship, does one define it as slash because you know the vidder sees them that way? Alternatively, there are vids that deal with Bodie and Doyle's relationship as friends and partners, but where does that become slash? Knowing the vidder's point of view seems to have a lot to do with it.
An example of one I'm not sure about is Culf's recent vid of Billy Joel "Only the Good Die Young", where Bodie seems to be set on corrupting Doyle, but I think it's to do with Doyle relaxing his lofty principles, not seduction.

Are there many vids like this, I wonder? Certainly almost all the vids I knew up to last year (I've not been keeping up with the Youtube ones, I'm afraid) came across as "slash" to me, although I guess there were a few that weren't... "Fields of Marigold", for instance. Hmmn, Mary Van Duesen's (sp?) I rarely think of as slash... did we watch The Hunting Song? It's really the one of hers that I do like, though I don't think I've seen them all...
I dunno - because I see the slash in the series, I guess I tend to see it in the same way in other things, just as a result of the lads' relationship. They aren't meant to be slashed in the eps, and BC would perhaps be horrified (and/or MS/LC, who knows really?) but it doesn't stop us doing it... (Hmmn, totally other subject, the way we treat people who identify as "fans" somehow differently from those who might not - or at least not in our "own" communities... *gets all Friday-afternoonish-philosophical...* So I don't think a vid's story has to be overtly about slash for it to be included in a slash vid list... *g*

Date: 2009-09-04 02:46 pm (UTC)Knowing the vidder's point of view seems to have a lot to do with it - I think that can be why people read it as slash but that doesn't necessarily translate for me. For videos to be slash can be a very tricky thing, all down to the editing and the song and the juxtaposition of the lyrics and images. After all the show is gen, for all that we slashers read more into it and add extra layers, that is how it was filmed and presented.

Date: 2009-09-04 06:03 pm (UTC)My slash vids:
Every Little Kiss
Breathe
I Know You're Out There Somewhere
Roll With The Changes
Let Me Be Your Armour
I think that if a vidder says the vid is slash, then I accept that. Just as I do with a story. I don't argue with the creator. *bg* Now I might read something else into the vid, but I believe the creator if they say it's gen even if I find it slashy.
As a note, when vidding, I think it's pretty hard make it "slash" with just clips from the show unless you have suggestive lyrics. Sure, you can cut some clips close enough with longing glances, but generally I think the lyrics tell me whether or not the vid is slash. Unless one cuts a vid like "Every Little Kiss", where there ain't no problem telling.
I do have "gen only" friends who will watch slash vids because they feel that even with suggestive lyrics, it's only wishful thinking on the slasher's part! Other than adding slash art, of course. *g* Or vidding QAF. *snirk*

Date: 2009-09-04 07:17 pm (UTC)"generally I think the lyrics tell me whether or not the vid is slash". That is very candid (it's not just the song that sells it, it's your editing too), but I wouldn't argue. The slash vids I find most effective are where the lyrics seem to be the interior monologue of Bodie or Doyle thinking of the other. How you (vidders) do is quite beyond me!
Hence, the vids I like best tend to be songs with male vocals, because they fit the characters. (I do like Jaicen's "Sweet about me", but that girl Gabriel Kilmie has a wonderful voice. And it's not slash, Jaicen doesn't seem to do slash, she just has the lads oozing sex appeal).
"I believe the creator if they say it's gen even if I find it slashy." But what takes precedence, the creator's intention or the viewer's interpretation? And do such vids exist?

Date: 2009-09-04 11:22 pm (UTC)My pleasure entirely.
My reaction to "Breathe" was the same as Siskiou's, I found it quite unbearably sad when I saw it first (I will go a long way to avoid partner death in fic, too). Only watched it again yesterday for the second time, and found it a bit easier. But I do love the way you've edited it.
And this is a good example of what we're talking about - you label "Breathe" as slash, but if you hadn't, I could see it as about close friendship too. Should one draw such distinctions between love and friendship anyway...? (it's late, I'm falling asleep).

Date: 2009-09-23 11:50 pm (UTC)I had seen 'And So It Goes', and found it unbearably sad - so you can be pleased that it had the intended effect. Not one to watch often, as I want Pros vids to make me happy.
Interpol - I LOVE this, it has everything I like best in a Pros vid - fast rock music, lots of bass, male vocal. And the image quality is brilliant, don't know how you got it so clear compared to most vids I've seen in the past on youtube.
Now I watch it closely (unlike the first time I watched it, when I must have been just watching the action scenes) it is undeniably slashy - it just isn't so obvious because there's lots of action too. Maybe it should be characterised as a Pros action vid, which just happens to have romantic moments too because that's how the lads just are with each other, rather than a vid that focuses on their relationship - I'm not making myself clear, am I?
It's past my bed time, now, I will update my list tomorrow to include these two treats.
Soon after I posted my list, my computer broke down, and the one thing that worried me the most was losing all these vids - most I could download again, of course, but it would take a long time. Fortunately the computer man saved all my data (I hope he didn't look at too much of it!), but as of today I now have an external hard drive to use as back up. Yay.
Any more of your nice Pros vids planned? Please? I don't suppose you fancy doing one with McFly 'Corrupted'? I want to see a Pros vid to that song SO MUCH that I'm tempted to try it myself, but I really don't know where to start.
Thanks again for these!

Date: 2009-09-24 09:10 pm (UTC)My excuse is that yours is so shiny and new. It's really exciting (for me) that there are new Pros vids being made.
Yours is just beautiful (that wonderful picture quality, too), and sort of haunting, very well chosen scenes, and definitely slashy.
I really like your "We Will Rock You" vid too, and your comment on youtube, about it fitting Pros.
