I started to read "Special Forces", and didn't get very far. There was no connection with the characters (for me) to make me read past the initial chapter. On the other hand I realised that this author also wrote "Her Majesty's Men", which used to be freely accessible on the web. I remember enjoying what I did read of that story, and becoming quite caught up in the lives of the characters - something I can't imagine happening with SF.
I have some idea of who the author is IRL and if I'm right she's not a native English speaker.
