Injured Innocents is written by O Yardley. Not O'Yardley. If folk would take a moment to look at the name, they might work out why there is no full stop between O and Yardley.

D'you know, it took me years to figure that out - and even then I had to have someone point it out to me. I have a strange feeling I'm very guilty of putting full stop between the "O" and the "Yardley" too... I shall apologise as well, both in retrospect and in case I ever do it again purely from habit...

Thanks for changing the author's name. I can understand why folk would put a full stop between O and Yardley but not why they would put an apostrophe. But then I've always wondered how people come to choose the pseudonym they use as their writing/LJ name. Whitehills, for instance, is a outlying suburb of the town I used to live in, I lived in Whitehills for 3 months and have fond memories of it.

I've always been very fond of Injured Innocents. It's a long, slow-developing story, but I find it works beautifully as a comfort read for me. It's for those times when I want to disappear into another world, where things work out without too much angst. *g* I like the set-up for the development of their relationship very much, and I really like the first time they come together--it's a sort of erotic disbelief, and I can see them going for it. *g* I've heard a lot of people say it goes on too long, and there isn't enough to hold their interest. I can see that, but when I'm in a particular mood (like way over-stressed), this is one I reach for.

Many thanks for posting this, Angel. I don't think I've read it but you never know because I tend to confuse it with Island Innocents (I think)....isn't there a story with that name, too? Can't remember who wrote it, though.

I seem to remember that I really like the start of this, and I love the idea of them being on the canal together, but there were places where it fell just the wrong side of slushy for me... Won't stop me reading it again, mind, and I think I liked it better the second time, so... *g*

Oh I adore Injured Innocents. It's one huge story with little stories weaved in and around, and I thoroughly enjoy it every time I read it.

It's a first time - my fave - and I love the thought of Bodie as the hairdressed in those wonderfully tight jeans, and Doyle not tipping him as he should, and starting what the owner of the hairdressing shop (forgot his name temporarily, sorry!) thinks is the Romance of the Century.

And the holiday/honeymoon on the narrowboat is what makes it so special. I'm with them every step of the way, and loving them not finding out about the beds on board and the problems they find with having a holiday on the canals.

Always gives me a really good feeling whilst reading it, and definitely one for a first-time fan's collection.

I couldn't seem to find a variation on the name I wanted (something to do with an aurora, because I was in Alaska at the time) that was free, and everything else I thought of was taken too! Eventually I took to flicking through a favourite poetry book for inspiration, and came to Emily Dickinson - there is a certain slant of light - and it seemed to fit perfectly with auroras, and with slash and with seeing the world through lj. Of course "slantedlight" was also taken, but that was okay, because I'd started writing Prosfic by then (although not posting it!), so "bySlantedlight" seemed to make sense too... *g*

I'm always fascinated by the ways people have chosen their names too, you know, that's a great question to ask...!

I'm afraid I'm one of those people. I'm on my second attempt trying to make my way through it and still have yet to get to the canal boat. Every time I try to read it there just seems to be absolutely no compelling narrative reason for me to continue. So I don't.

However, given the enthusiasm expressed here, I'm going to give it the old college try this time 'round.

I just finished reading this one for the first time yesterday. I adore the Bodie-undercover-as-a-hairdresser scenario and the canal boat trip. But otherwise I do find it too prolonged and meandering (what an appropriate word!). The love between the lads and their need for each other is depicted quite vividly but they come across as rather soft and sentimental - I think that's a common thread in O Yardley's writing. I am also quite bored with all the time spent describing the lads with their girls before they finally get together. I'm glad I read it since it's been recced so glowingly by numerous people, but it will be a long time before I read it again (if at all).

I started reading this the other day. Loved the hairdresser op, then things slowed down. As you say, too much "in-between" detail. I got as far as the canal and ran aground ended up stuck at about chapter fifteen. Or sixteen (I think fifteen had some decent smut in it).

I'll give it another go sometime when I'm in an idyllic mood. Or on a long plane flight, perhaps.

This is one of my favorites because it's slow and meandering. After stressful stories it just like chocolate, a warm feeling to read and lose a day in the tale.

Bodie and Doyle may be softer than in some stories, but they never lose their malesness with O Yardley.

I like this story, but wouldn't disagree that it takes its time getting where it's going. A good edit would probably have helped. Still the lads were entertaining and I agree it's an excellent comfort read.

All that being said, I found it =much= more compelling than another O Yardley tale that also wandered its way along, A Lovesome Thing, which is one of the few zines I've started but not finished.
