Chapter Eight
Bodie wakes up in the Capri, where he's been not-sleeping, and realises that it's Doyle's movement as he leaves Gabe's house that has woken him. Doyle seems "clean and right as ninepence", vaulting over the railings into the street - and Bodie takes great pleasure in kicking open the door of the Capri so that Doyle "whips around".
Bodie is furious that Doyle has chosen to go to Gabe, and Doyle is furious that Bodie has followed him. Bodie accuses him of carelessness (gun out in the open), being a security risk, and ultimately sleeping with Gabe. Doyle's anger cools and he tells Bodie to "Take me home. I'm not going to live like this. I'm out."
Bodie drives to Doyle's place, and Doyle jumps out of the car before it's even stopped. He doesn't lock his doors properly though, and Bodie follows him inside to where he's getting changed. They fight - physically fight - when Bodie taunts Doyle by calling him a "closet queer", but the fight turns into desire, and then into sex, and Doyle lets Bodie fuck him on the kitchen floor, crying "scaldingly" but desperately wanting it too.
Bodie tries to apologise, but Doyle stops him with a hand over his mouth, then asks Bodie to let Cowley know he'll be late but will be in later to sort things out. Bodie is confused - Doyle is still going to resign. When Doyle explains that he's "not cut out for this game", Bodie protests - "If you're not, no-one is. You're the best" and then realises that he should have told Doyle that long ago.
But it's too late - Doyle leaves.
So there we go - what do you make of that? *g*
