The world-building is great, I'm loving that too. Have you read the Point of Hopes (http://www.pointsman.net/hopes.html) books? (I'm sure you have.) That's another world-building-around-the-lads story that I adore...
I've got to admit, I'm not sure I saw all that much energy in MS's acting here - but I blame the movie rather than him. Maybe (after a while!) I'll watch it again and see if I see him any differently!
