Reading Rooms XVII and XVIII - two heads-upses at once

A second reminder/Prosfic reading prompt this week, because our story for this week is a nice quick read, but the story suggested for next week is much longer - virtually novel length (although lots of people have probably read it already). We did say that we wouldn't include stories that were very long, because not everyone can read them in a week, but I thought that just this once we might be able to combine one with having a shorter read the week before? So:
