I'm just not sure, despite the very good writing, whether it's anything more than a kinky hot PWP.... Oh, I find it much more than that - and I find lots of reasons given in the story for the way they use sex to deal with their emotions too. I've mentioned it down below in my comment, actually, if you're interested (I won't repeat it here, cos - well, I said it there!)... *g*
And I think there are enough gaps in the canon eps for us to be able to fit in all sorts of things. I mean, Doyle's artistry is only mentioned a couple of times, but look what fandom makes of it! And Bodie's merc days, of course - he always ends up in fic as a real jungle fighter, but from what's said in the eps he could well have been a be-suited money-man, like Marty Martell... I kind of like the idea that the reason Doyle didn't match well with Ann was that she really couldn't match up with what he needed from a partner in order to cope with the job, for example!
