I don't think that you can take MS and LC out of the equation because they made Bodie and Doyle who they are to us Yes, excellent point. If it was two other actors, even if they followed the same script exactly, they couldn't create the same dynamic as MS/LC did. And I think that's where a part of their essence comes from - what the actors brought to the characters. Without that it's something else completely!
Presumably (not that I've seen it) The New Professionals didn't really grab people for the same reason. Despite the fact that New Pros were also ...professionals, the lethal best at what they do, focused, deadly, elite team -- ultimately loyal to no one but each other (quoting Josh, above) I think that for most Pros fans, because the essence of B/D is much more than that (and what I've been trying to get at!) New Pros didn't rouse anything close to the same feelings.
