Yes, I think you're making a fair point here, although I do read it a bit as the whole soul-mate thing, where partners are more like extra limbs, and when one dies it's like missing-limb syndrome - they can feel the absence... My impression is that the author means it to be a bit more dramatic than just expressing shock though...
